• Are 80s-90s animes more interesting than what we're getting today?

My dad and all them people watched 80s animes when they were kids. My dad watched Pacific Rim and said he loved shows like Voltron. Whenever I look on Netflix, most of them are usually just have big breasted females on the cover, I mean they are some exceptions but still. What is your opinion
I'm generally a person who hates anime. But there are some really good older anime shows from the 80s/90s I've watched.
The only anime I truly enjoyed was from the very late 70s.
I'm not a big anime watcher, but the one series that I really like - Samurai Champloo - is only from like 2004 or so. Also Studio Ghibli films have always been good.
Overall, not really, honestly. There's a lot of old classics, sure, but there's been some pretty good stuff over the years. Also, nearly all the anime on Netflix is trash.
I think the situation is that studios tend to focus on certain types of anime (harem, cute girls doing cute things, etc.) to cater to a specific fan base, resulting in a boring and repetitive formula. Also a lot of popular shows that you would find on Netflix might not exactly be the best quality but they put it out because there are enough people who want it. You just have to find the quality shows among the excess. Unfortunately I can't speak about 80s-90s anime because I have not watched a whole lot from the time.
Nope, we've got tonnes of great stuff from the last 10 years. See : Durarara/Baccano Steins;Gate (but not anything else with ; in the title) Gurren Lagann/Kill la Kill Anything by Gen Urobuchi Mushishi *monogatari series Also girls und panzer which is probably not what you're looking for but I'm legally obligated to endorse it anyway
Honestly, I think these days it's just harder to find good anime because there's such a vast amount of it being released. Plus finding good older anime is easy because the classics are already established and you don't have to wade through the bad series to find the good ones.
I agree that the majority of anime nowadays is pretty dull or filled to the brim with stupid fan service that, in my opinion, can completely ruin the show no matter how good the story or presentation is. Though I've seen quite a few shows that were very satisfying to watch and worth sifting through mountains of shit to find. I'm no anime connoisseur, so my opinions are just my opinions. There's a few recent shows that stick out to me. Highschool of the Dead is a good example of a show that was pretty much ruined by gratuitous amounts of stupid fan service. It could have been a decent show, even if they stuck to a bunch of mindless violence with the same story. An example of a show I found to be really enjoyable is Monogatari. There is a bit of fan service in this show as well, but it isn't too bad, and it doesn't really take away from the show as a whole. For good reason, too.
The only anime I truly enjoyed was from the very late 70s.
oh wow, that animation. Well, I guess at the very least anime is better to look at nowadays. also, nahhh, there's still plenty of interesting anime out there, can't really throw out a list though cause I have no idea what your tastes are.

Especially KyoAni, where cute, well-done art is pretty much all they're good for.
I think older anime's pretty cool. Certainly more variety compared to today, but then again I don't know a whole lot about modern anime.
Samurai Champloo
that and full metal alchemist is pure gold (Brotherhood though, it's new but great, the first animated version is shit, so JUST go with brotherhood) planet of the beast king is OK but ehhh anything "Ghost in the shell" is fucking brilliant I NEED to watch it but I've heard nothing but praise on "Cowboy debop"
I NEED to watch it but I've heard nothing but praise on "Cowboy debop"
Cowboy Bebop is the cornerstone of cornerstone anime.

No for the most part, but I want more kochira katsushikaku kameari koenmae hashutsujo.
Mindless violence and fan service was the show.
It started off well enough. Then it just turned into a constant bombardment of tits with the zombies as more of an afterthought. And then

I have some older anime shows that I have enjoyed, but I find more recent animes have a more appealing art style and that does play a part in how much I enjoy a show. Some older shows have horrendous art styles (imo) and I really just can't stomach watching them because of it.
There are still a lot of interesting stories to be told! Take these for example: Naoki Urasawa's Monster is the story of a neurosurgeon who saved the life of a boy who he would later find out was a mass murderer. The doctor then devotes his life to eliminating the monster he created, faced with the reality of becoming a monster himself. Mushi-Shi is the story of a wanderer named Ginko, traveling across ancient Japan, employing himself as a Mushi Master, one who deals with Mushi. Mushi are life in its simplest form; shadows that eat memories or “devour the sun,” sentient snowballs, mysterious birds that hide in seashells, or fires that such the heat away from humans. It’s beautiful. The second season is currently airing, too.
You just need to look for the right stuff. The new Gundam is good and shows like Kill La Kill and Attack on Titan are great! Same with Gurren Lagann, PSG and a few others. Netflix has shit anime don't use that for it.
If you think modern anime is terrible you haven't watched enough JoJo
You guys forgetting the best one

The reason people always mention classic titles because nobody remembers the crap or cares about it.
If you think modern anime is terrible you haven't watched enough JoJo
Can you really call the recent JoJo anime modern when the original story dates back to 20 years ago?
Nope. Here, have some proof.
Can you really call the recent JoJo anime modern when the original story dates back to 20 years ago?
Yes? Romance of the Three Kingdoms is hundreds of years old, but I'd still call the 2009 anime modern
Patlabor was hella good, kinda felt like a mix between Mech action and 24 or some shit. The second was my favourite of the series.
today's stuff is much better written also manga has become the source material for anime today which means things have well established backdrops too
I would say that the older ones had the best visuals. Many of the current directors in anime were former good key animators like Hideaki Anno (NGE), Mitsuo Iso (Denno Coil), and Masahiro Ando (Sword of the Stranger).
