• HTC TyTN II - need advice

Does anyone happen to have any experience with HTC smartphones or this model in particular? I'd be grateful to hear your opinion on it, seeing as it's dirt cheap and looks really comfortable to use. I'm looking for a reasonably-priced, bulky smartphone, none of that fancy Hero-esque touch bullshit. just look at it
Windows Mobile sucks, see if there are are custom roms floating around with android or winmo 6.5 or 7
Windows Mobile does indeed suck, and hating the Hero is stupid. Android is a better OS than WinMo 6 in my opinion. If you want something with a keyboard, get a Cliq or Droid or something.
HTC make damn good phones, I have the HD2 (Leo) and while Win Mobile doesn't look so fancy or user friendly, it still has it's pros. xda-developers is worth checking out, they'll have a section dedicated to this phone I'd imagine.
HTC makes great phones.
Windows Mobile is pretty good. It'll be even better if it's upgradeable to Windows Mobile 6.5 but it's not. Loads of apps but not as much as the iPhone has.
It's a very sturdy phone and I would recommend it. Thing is it probably runs winmo5 and it's pretty ancient in a world of palm pres and iphones. Do what I'm doing - wait until the holidays (I know it's almost a year but hey) for winmo7 devices - or get something with android on it. Or even winmo6.5 (but it just sucks marginally less). [editline]02:41AM[/editline] .. or if you're not into that next-gen of phones, the TYTN II is pretty much perfect for you. I myself still use a P3600 and am quite happy with it and what it can still do. Plus the boys at XDADevelopers keep stuff fresh.
That screen looks like 6.1. Which is decent.
That screen looks like 6.1. Which is decent.
It's WM5.
It's WM5.
Kaiser was initially shipped with 6.0 rom, only to be replaced with 6.1 within few months. 6.5 Rom hasn´t been released for kaiser, but there are some custom roms floating around. What you see on the picture is default rom.

Being fact nazi can be fun sometimes :) Kaiser is still an excellent phone. There are few disadvantages, at least from my experience: 1) It´s bulky, but belt pouch that comes with device mitigates that nicely. 2) There are no 3d drivers available, so using nav. software may be a bit of pain. Xda-developers are working on custom driver though.
I've used that phone, it's pretty good, 400Mhz processor so it's still not that bad, some of the buttons are so small that they're hard to press though on screen, and you have to use the stylus, not your hands. Also don't drop it or it will shatter. Yeah my friend owned the Tytn II and gave it to his ex girlfriend when he got a new phone and she obliterated it.
So you're saying Windows Mobile 5.0 Kaiser ships with is something to avoid? What about Google G1? It has Android and apparently has the sexy bulkiness I'm looking for, as well as a physical QWERTY keyboard. Does anyone have any experience with that? [editline]09:13PM[/editline] And what about HTC Lancaster? It features Android as well but it's the first time (upon google searching for HTC's with that OS) I've ever heard about it, is it somewhat regionally limited?
I used it's predecessor for two years, the TyTN. Nice phone, a little bulky compared to many other devices, not too bad though. Battery life was excellent in my experience, oh and it's a /really/ nice keyboard. Mine did start to fail after a year and a half but HTC replaced it without issue (and gave me a screen replacement too, gratis). Can't say I'd recommend Windows Mobile though, it's horrid.
Sorry for the necrobump, but today I played around with a HD2, which sports WinMo 6.1 and I really loved the way it's shaped. Is 6.1 that terrible? Android smartphones are really rare in a considerable price range. [editline]03:51PM[/editline]
Dont get the old HTC's, they kinda suck. Anything before Windows Mobile 7.0 is crap and slow.
I have an HTC Touch Pro2, Tilt2 if you are on AT&T. It's amazing, I can run Android, Windows Mobile, Or Ubuntu on it. There are a ton of ROM's floating around XDA Developers that basically made this phone a keeper for me. Windows Mobile is worth it as long as you HardSPL and put a new ROM on your phone. Much like any Windows computer you buy from a prebuilt, it's usually loaded with a bunch of crap, so it is best that you reformat it when you get it. Now, my experiences only hold true with the Touch Pro 2. However, I heard the HD2 is the same thing without a keyboard and the TyTnII looks like a smaller version. I say go for it, but if you can afford a Touch Pro 2, don't hesitate.

[editline]03:51PM[/editline]
I use the HD2 myself which runs Windows Mobile 6.5 not 6.1, which is waaaay better in my opinion. For a windows mobile phone so many people say it is the best you can get and I agree. However, I seriously recommend the Hero, such a good price and amazing size and build quality, runs anything android greatly. I had the TYTN II a long time back(i'm a massive HTC fan if you didn't guess) and the custom roms make it perfect, win mo 6.5 for a start, just the size and screen resolution may put you off.
shard, thanks for the advice but, as I mentioned earlier, purely-touch-no-keyboard phones are a big no for me. I'm looking for a slider keyboard. I'd go for the Hero if it had one, for sure. Any experience with: -HTC Dream -HTC Lancaster
If you want a good phone wait awhile. I'd recommend android if you want to be on the bleeding edge and with tinkering be able to run the newest roms. Windows Mobile 7 seems to be shooting itself in the leg. Despite it's dx9 and siverlight support, it seems that with the ability to only get apps off the store and its locked down operating system can bring it down. We will have to wait and see how it turns out. For hardware, wait until snapdragon is on a phone you like ( it is the base requirement for any winmo7 phone. ) Getting anything else is locking yourself into last gen hardware. People will say hey the older qualcom chips work fine, but flash and new applications are made for the snap dragon chipset and its graphical capabilities.
