My uncle has a copy of Windows XP, and I could really save the $100 to get a 5870 rather than a 5850. However I heard you need a floppy drive to install it. Is this true?
Also, is having XP for a few weeks or so then switching to 7 ok? Will i have to reformat my HDD, or can I install my games and then install 7 with the games still there?

What ? What are you talking about, the 5870 or XP ? :tinfoil:
Anyways, both don't need a Floppy Disk to install.
If you switch to 7, you'll have to reformat.
You don't need a floppy disk to install an OS... They only hold 1mb, which these days is useless, nothing fits on there. especially nothing to do with an OS... I think they used to have Boot Disk's or something that ran off floppy's (I was about 6 at the time, the IT guy at school used to come use them)
And to go from Xp to 7 you'll need to clean install.
But you could probably keep your things tidy enough for a couple of weeks while you wait to get 7.
5870 isn't really worth it over 5850, you can just overclock a 5850 to 5870 speeds.
Of course overclocking will increase heat and shorten life span.

Isn't there a limit to keep your Gpu near the same temperature and have the same life span?
Or is it: You overclock = hotter and shorter life span ?
Oh, and use Linux instead! BUAHUABHUHUBHAUHBUH
To OC it enough to get a noticeable increase in performance will bring with it heat/short life span... unless he buys watercooling.. To keep it cool and keep the life about as long as it should have been, possibly longer if he can get it to run cooler with the water system.

Using Linux may actually be a decent idea, but wait till someone who understands Linux better than I do gets in to this thread to explain the pro's/con's of using linux here.

and an overclock big enough to bring the performance up to something like a 5870 would certainly bring the heat..
You don't need a floppy drive for Win 7, but XP needed drivers for SATA hard drives, which had to be from a floppy I think. This might have changed with XP SP3 though.
