simple enough to do.
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 32 Bit Edition
Pros: Fast boot up, fast shut down, snapping function, *aero scrolling with windows key and tab (correct me, i know im wrong on how to explain this), not much background task unlike Vista
Cons: Still get BSOD at times

Tilde key doesn't work in some games
Windows XP SP2

Windows XP

Laptop : Arch Linux + wmii window manager
Context : Old crumbling laptop (has been in two fights, stolen and stripped for pieces then retrieved, PSU burnt in powersurge and replaced, ram burnt in same power surge and replaced (all 256k of it) and fan sucked up some coca-cola during a lan-party, replaced motor with a scalextrix motor, which required removing the in-built modem for space)
Pros :
- Despite the age and relative instability of the machine this OS boots in under 15 seconds and is extremely snappy.
- The wmii window manager is a keyboard-optimized experience, which is great when I'm on the run and can be bothered to pack a mouse (I hate the touchpad).
- Security is perfect, since the system is a custom config, no-one but me knows how to use it.
- Arch's rolling release system means I'm always on the cutting edge of updates, and bugfixes are almost instantaneous.
Cons :
- If you're a non-geek, or don't like to spend too much time with your hands in the guts of your machine, you may get a little frustrated using Arch and wmii (Sorry guys but Ubuntu and SUSe aren't that much better than their windows couterparts, so either stay windows, or actually GO Linux)
- Due to the experimental nature of some of the packages in Arch, things can be a little unstable if not configured correctly, but as I said, bugfixes are usually release within a couple hours of them being reported.
Desktop : Windows XP + litestep explorer remplacement
Context : Relatively old for a gaming machine - Intel Core2 Duo @ 2,4GHz, GeForce 8600 GTS, 1 GB RAM
Pros :
- Once tweaked XP can be quite snappy, first thing to do is kill explorer and get a replacement that doesn't eat RAM for breakfast.
- It runs games quite well (as I said, it's tweaked, so even with fairly aging stuff, I get 75 fps in Mirror's Edge with full graphics but no AA)
- It's easy to use, so when my family come over, I don't have to explain to them how to check their email.
Cons :
XP : Hey there's an update!
Me: GAH! Disable updates! Stop getting in my way!
XP : Hey, your computer just got pwned by lack of an important update!
Me : OK, give me your stoopid updates...
XP : YOU'RE NOT USING THE FIREWALLZ!
Me : I know, I don't need it, there's a physical firewall on my router and no-one gives a shit about my stuff anyway
XP : YOU'RE RUNNING OUT OF VIRTUAL MEMORY!
Me : Tried checking if there's any space left in the 4 gigs I've reserved just for you on the other hard drive?
XP : Oh, yeah, sorry, but I won't flush that one automatically though, could you do that when you switch me on?
Me : Guess I'll write a script...
XP : YOU JUST TURNED OFF YOUR ANTIVIRUS!
Me : It's updating, can you just chill out for a minute and it'll be right back up
XP : Sorry I'm a little paranoid
Me : Don't worry, at least you're not like my girlfriend's Vista machine
Vista : WOAH! YOU JUST PRESSED A BUTTON! WTF??? DID YOU MEAN TO DO THAT?
GF : Can I use your computer to check my email?
I guess what I'm saying is : XP is an annoying prick, but at least it's not Vista.
I use Linux Mint 8.
Pros: It's not Windows. Fast as hell, customizable, easy to use, and more secure than Windows. Updates are easy, and don't nag me. GIMP isn't too different from Photoshop, and it's free.
Cons: Some of my Emulators lag when they shouldn't, like GBC games.
Windows Vista Basic 32-bit
Pros: ~A lot~ of things.
Cons: I can't enact my dreams of having a computer with 8GB of usable RAM.
