Hi, a friend of mine has internet connection problems. He is running Windows Vista, and is directly connected to his modem. A different PC has no trouble connecting to the same modem.
When he connects, Vista says he has network + internet. But when he runs any internet using program, for example a browser (he has tried different ones), no page can be displayed. The strange thing is that Windows Update seems to be able to connect to internet and succesfully download + install updates.
Things he has tried:
Reset Router + Reboot PC
Flush DNS
Check hosts file
Reinstall network drivers
Contact ISP
I'm suspecting a faulty .SYS file crashing on boot and not allowing any internet communication. But I have no idea to as which one it is. Moreso because he sometimes receives fatal errors when launching programs that then connect to internet.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?
Does it work in safemode+networking ?
Maybe a virus? Did he run a scan? If he doesn't have an av scanner, he can use this free online one:

I used to have the same problem with Vista after I installed SP1 I think.
The internet would work for a few minutes, but after that browser would give me 404 on everything, but I could still find and connect to servers through Steam.
Yes safe mode + networking doesn't work, he has also tried a different network card in a different slot on the motherboard.

No virus
