• How do I uninstall windows 7, and put XP on.

I'm about to try and sell my old laptop so I wanted to return it to the factory default. The problem is I can't just pop in the XP disc and do it that way apparently, just brings me to system restore. I need some guidance here.
You'll need an install disc, they usually never give you that with the laptop itself.
I stated in the OP I have the disc, is it just suppose to prompt me or what?
System restore does just that, if by system restore you mean a disc that is like a recovery disc that restores your computer to factory state.
I stated in the OP I have the disc, is it just suppose to prompt me or what?
"The disc" isn't descriptive at all. Is it one of the shiny Windows XP discs? With the Microsoft logo and all? If it's the one that came with the laptop I can assure you it's probably not an install disc.
It's got XP on it, but all it seems to do is bring me to recovery, and from there I can't do anything. I don't care about anything on the laptop so can I just delete windows and go from there?
is that what the disc looks like? complete with shiny surface? [editline]15th August 2011[/editline] How about instead of rating me dumb you answer my questions? It sounds like you have a recovery disc. The image I posted is what an install disc looks like, and if I can't rule out the possibility that you're an idiot who thinks the recovery disc provided with the laptop is a fully-fledged install disc then I can't help you further.
1:Format HDD 2:Instal from disc.
put the disc in, restart your computer and go into the boot menu (there'll be a notice telling you what button to press when you first start your computer) boot from the cd/dvd format the hard drive install xp to it [editline]15th August 2011[/editline] why in gods name do you want to downgrade from 7 to a 10 year old OS anyway?

Since that disc obviously isn't going to work: Do you have a sticker somewhere with an XP key on it?
Since that disc obviously isn't going to work: Do you have a sticker somewhere with an XP key on it?
Yeah, it's on the bottom. My laptop is now completely fucked because I tried following microsoft's instructions on returning it to a previous OS. I can't even boot into win7 anymore. It seems to be ignoring both discs I have which I know have XP on them because when I put them in my PC it comes up with the menu, except with "install xp" or whatever blanked out.

First of all, why the fuck would you do this. Second, just format the HDD with your prefered method, stick the disc in and you should be on your way.

Learn 2 Compute. Then, torrent an XP iso and use the CD key on the sticker on the laptop. [editline]15th August 2011[/editline]
It seems no one reads the fucking OP anymore
Oh I'm sure he read it, but selling the laptop with a decade old OS is dumb.
Yeah, it's on the bottom.
1. Find a computer with a CD burner and a blank CD-R. (Or DVD if that's what you have) 2. Find a WinXP ISO. MSDN, Pirate Bay, doesn't matter where. Just ignore any keys you find online. 3. Burn ISO to disc. 4. Use *that* disc to install XP. If that doesn't work then your optical drive is fucked up.
Alright I found a random unlabelled CD that seems to be working, finally it asked to boot from CD, wiped the HDD and it's installing XP now. Thanks for all the help. The reason why the downgrade is necessary is I lended it to my brother while he was staying with me and he installed a pirated copy of Win7, i'd rather avoid any legal issues by selling it in that state so I was just going to put it back the way it was when I originally got it.

There's just alot of people installing Windows XP for whatever r
Ahh, fair enough. There's just alot of people installing Windows XP for whatever r
If those people are only doing it because program X doesn't work in Win7, there's two ways they can go about it: - If it's a high level edition of Win7 (Pro and up) and it's just one non-game program, use Windows XP Mode (essentially a VM preloaded with XP that can integrate into your Windows Start Menu). - If it's a bunch of programs, a game (Fallout 3 :argh:), or you don't have a high level edition of Win7, dualboot.
