New Story: I had a GTX 470 that would freeze, causing the image on screen to stay still. This could even occur on the Windows startup. Sent it in, got a replacement, and now a week and a half later, the issue has started again. So I got an error report, and somebody from the EVGA forums helped me read the minidump, and this is what we found. On Tue 12/10/2010 5:31:28 AM your computer crashed This was likely caused by the following module: nvlddmkm.sys Bugcheck code: 0x117 (0xFFFFFA8009C5E4E0, 0xFFFFF8800494BD0C, 0x0, 0x0) Error: VIDEO_TDR_TIMEOUT_DETECTED Dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\101210-28017-01.dmp file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\nvlddmkm.sys product: NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 260.89 company: NVIDIA Corporation description: NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 260.89 On Tue 12/10/2010 5:30:28 AM your computer crashed This was likely caused by the following module: nvlddmkm.sys Bugcheck code: 0x116 (0xFFFFFA80090A4010, 0xFFFFF88004936D0C, 0xFFFFFFFFC00000B5, 0xA) Error: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR Dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\101210-22651-01.dmp file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\nvlddmkm.sys product: NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 260.89 company: NVIDIA Corporation description: NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 260.89 Nvidia has commented on this here: LINK. So now I need to find out what is wrong. I have already swapped my card for my Brother's Radeon 4890, and can confirm for the moment that it is working fine. However, my 470 is working just as well in his computer. I've also ran memtest for 3 passes, with zero errors found. I have a feeling that it might be your mobo
I have a feeling that it might be your mobo
Hmmm...how could I determine if it is the motherboard or not? I would appreciate any help. All I can tell you is that the cpu and motherboard temp readings in the BIOS are reading normal (or at least I think they are normal, both are around ~40-45 degrees Celsius). I also read that it might help to try and replace the power cables leading from my PSU to the GPU. Would anyone else recommend that? [editline]02:23AM[/editline] Oh just to clarify, it sometimes freezes at the startup screen. Assuming the computer makes it past startup, I can usually browse the internet just fine until it freezes. I'd say 95% of the time, I can cause a freeze to occur immediately by starting up a program, say for instance the Nvidia control panel then preview the graphical settings (When the 3D model of the Nvidia logo is rendered). If by the grace of God it doesn't freeze, it means I can run any programs or games without problems until it freezes, usually occurs under an hour. I've never witnessed any visual artifacts or the like while using these programs. [editline]02:37AM[/editline] Other people with the same issue. Think I may make an account over there and post as well. [editline]02:50AM[/editline] Okay one last update for you guys tonight, I promise. According to user Drunkinkid22, there is a driver issue, specifically with the Nvidia HD sound device that's installed. He lists a procedure here that permanent disables the software. Some users have reported success, so it's worth a shot. [editline]October 13, 2010[/editline] This information was post prior to the new information in the original post.
Since they sent you a new one which had the same problems, and it worked in their setup (they wouldn't lie, so much legal issues could arise from such a practice it makes more sense just to send a new card) I agree its either a driver issue, or your motherboard's socket/PCIe bus is damaged. Did you check if your CPU/GPU are running at optimal temperatures, spikes in the temps could cause the component to automatically shut down. Use this program to determine your computer's various temperatures: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html
Hey guys, read the original post for new information.
Drop the drivers back to the initial Fermi launch drivers and test. Be sure to use something Driver Sweeper or Driver Cleaner, and make sure you remove ALL registry entries on your card as well. Second, get a strong flashlight and check your GPU slot for cracks or black spots, including inside the slot itself.
Fermi Launch Drivers. Can't say I know what those are, but I'll just google it. EDIT: I assume they are the oldest drivers listed for the 470, Version: 197.41 I guess I'll start the process of reswapping cards then.
Yep.
Before I swap, some helpful user on the EVGA forums believes my memory timings could be off. Going to see what I can't find out.
