• So.. AMD PII x4 955 or 965

In the midst of getting components together for a PC build.. Looking to keep the costs low but go for the best hardware for the money I'm spending! Now.. I know the i5's are superior and everything but I'm more of an AMD man, besides the fact the i5-760 is £165 compared to the AMD's knocking considerable amounts off that, enough to get a decent CPU cooler and OC a X4 pretty well. So do I get a 965 or a 955... 965: £135 955: £112 Big difference and considering I'm going to OC up to around 3.8 I'm not sure the extra 200mhz on the old 965 is really worth the money.. Any ideas guys?
higher binned, better oc'ing performance
The 955 is fine, it's what I have and it's worked pretty well so far.
It may be higher binned, however I'm still going to OC either to 3.7/8 pretty fast so really is there any benefit considering the only difference is the clockspeed. However I have heard the 965 is revised in other ways too, any ideas? I'm fed up with looking at reviews on both the CPU's and want some advice. *edit* The benefit of the extra £20 which could be spent on cooling.
My bro has the 955, it's pretty beast, I'd go with it. But, that's just me. :0
I personally own the 955 and use it everyday and it has served me and many other people well and it overclocks great.
I have the 955 too, brilliant CPU! As far as I know the 965 is just a clocked 955 or even the 940. So I'd save the money and spend it on a good cooler instead, from experience I know that AMDs are like rubber bands when it comes to clocking providing you keep them cool.
965 is just overclocked 200MHz higher.
955 all the way.
I have 955 and it's good. I'd probably get the 965 though since it has a chance of OCing farther.
I would go with the 955, you could easily OC it to match the 965, and they are bound to perform roughly the same when they have matching clocks. All you would need really is a decent cooler if you want to push it a bit more. I should probably invest in a new cooler really.
That's exactly what I was thinking, with the money saved on the 955 I can easily buy a much better cooler than I would have been able to otherwise. Then get it all together and OC it when I have the time. I might just OC it up to the 3.4 straight away to close the gap straight away. Will be making sure I get one of the 955's with the C3 stepping though, to the point where I'll ask the guy in the store to bring both out. (online retailers got a outlet store not too far from me)
Even though on a purely objective scale the 965 is better, just invest the extra 20$ into a better cooler
