The "Quick Questions that does not Deserve a Thread"...Thread. V4
7,787 replies, posted
The purpose of this thread is simple. It's for those that have quick questions regarding on anything computer or perhaps electronics related, where a thread is not necessarily required.
The reason of why such thread is created is to help reducing forums from being cluttered with threads on minor questions which tends to be ignored, as well as keeping other threads on topic.
If you have any quick questions, such as "Can my computer run this game", or "How do I turn off automatic defragmentation", feel free to ask them here. If you have any questions that may require more opinions, diagnosing issues or is more complex opposing to a fast question along the lines of "What are some pros and cons over buying a GTX660 ti over the Radeon HD 7870", or "My computer BSODs when I plug in and would not restart. Please help me diagnose my issue", it may be wiser to create a thread in an appropriate section instead. You may ask them in this thread too, but the resulting amount of attention you will receive on your question may be insufficient.
Please be descriptive about your question when possible, rather than saying "my computer does not work, how should I fix it?"
For some reason when trying to connect my DualShock 3 controller via BlueTooth using Motion In Joy I get this message thing.
Any ways to fix this? Pairing my cellphone works, and pairing my Wii controller works.
Try unplugging it and then pluggin it back in again, I think I had to do that for my dongle to work with MIJ.
Okay so I have 7.1 speaker set up and only 2 speakers are working for some reason.
When I go into Windows Sound settings and do a test there it plays sounds on all speakers and I can hear them, however, when I play music it only comes from my front left and right speakers. Any ideas?

Your music's probably just stereo, you can "upsample" or whatever you want to call it to make stereo play on all the channels usually by going to your soundcards control panal and enabling it. Realtek has an option called "Speaker Fill" that does what you want, not sure which you have.
What's a good program for figuring out what stuff is eating up all my hard disk space? I used to use something called jDiskReport or something, but it kind of sucked and I'm sure there's a better one out there.

Thanks, works great.
I take it given the only response to my question on the last round being a bad link from a guy who's now banned, no, there's still no way to change your username on on facepunch?
I guess I'll just leave my avatar forever a picture of a plane to make a distinction from the swag crowd.

It's also pretty... sometimes when I'm cleaning out my HDD space, I like to leave it up on my second monitor.

It costs $20, but it is possible. Probably not worth it though - your username isn't really that bad. Or hell, just register as a new user, maybe?

I think my hard drive is dying.
After installing Ubuntu 12.04, Windows would no longer boot. Either through GRUB, or through normal means. It would crash to a blue screen (which doesn't stay up long enough for me to read) at the "Starting Windows" screen. Because of this I attempted to reinstall Windows and it acts like my hard drive doesn't exist when I get to the "select a storage device to install to" screen.
So, yeah. I think it's dying but I can still retrieve things off it from Linux and badblocks didn't bring back anything negative.

Also, when I initially attempted to install Ubuntu, it wouldn't let me partition it until I ran chkdsk, but I figured that was just a quirk of it being a 4 year old hard drive.

Well, fuck. I've answered my own question by stumbling on the Disk Utility in Ubuntu. I have 39 bad sectors. I've failed the "Reallocated Sector Count", which is a sign of a failing drive.

Double fuck.

Is there any good book writing software out there?

I went onto YouTube and tried a 7.1 speaker test and it still didn't work.
I will try what you said though. My soundcard is built in I think to my motherboard so I will have to get drivers for that I guess!
Youtube only supports 2.0 you silly geezer. No matter what you upload.
What's a good budget gaming keyboard under, say, $70? My little brother needs a new one, I wanted to buy him a G15 like I have but they seemingly aren't produced anymore.

I don't see how you need an expensive keyboard, mine cost £12 and its awesome.

Microsoft Word.
Why do you need any software besides a word processor? Heck, you could do it with Notepad if you really wanted.

That is where you would be wrong.

but if you're going to get an expensive keyboard it should be mechanical, wasting money on a poop keyboard with a red LED is stupid.
okay so i'm reformatting and i want to have everything ready to reinstall once i install XP after the reformat/s.
really the things i'm wondering about the most are drivers. i'm probably backing up everything on my hard drive so music, games, advanced utilities, game clients (like steam) aren't really a worry. what i'm aiming for here is to have every driver and basic client like Java and Flash and adobe reader. if someone has a list or something of basically everything that's essential to a windows user for full usability that would be nice.
during this computer's 10 year life span i've reformatted maybe 5 times, but that sounds a bit to high to me. and every single time it seems like it didn't reformat completely. should i just reformat multiple times? what's the best sure fire way to thoroughly reformat an HD so you know it's completely wiped?
in the end i want to be able to reformat the drive, then quickly, simply and easily reinstall everything basic that i need from a folder where i've gathered the essentials in my external hard drive. then go from there reinstalling everything else that isn't basic.

I can't afford MS Office or just Word alone. And notepad lacks features like pages, fonts, formatting, etc.

$50 over budget but they are worth every penny. http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/
I asked this a while ago, but the answer I got was kind of unclear. I am planning to upgrade from a AMD Phenom II x4 965 to an i5 3570k, which will require a new mobo obviously. My question is will I have to reinstall windows? I did that not long ago and if possible I would like to avoid it.
So is it possible to change motherboard and CPU without having to reinstall windows?
Also, my other concern is that windows may decide that its not the same computer and wont let me activate it, is that a possibility?
Thanks.

From what I have heard it is possible to switch motherboards without re installing windows but it causes a lot of issues if it even works at all, switching motherboards and from AMD to Intel I doubt it will work with success.
About the licences, if your talking about windows activation you can call Microsoft and tell them and they should give you a new key, if its about software then I know Adobe stuff doesn't like it but I'm not sure about other stuff
So I have a GTX 660m in my laptop, and whenever I turn on Physx in any game that uses it, my framerate tanks even when it was 60+ fps before. Google turned up nothing related to my issue. It happens in Hawken, Mirror's Edge and Borderlands 2. In Mirror's Edge and B2 my FPS is almost always 40+, unless I turn on physx, then it go down to the teens. Has anyone had this issue or know of a fix? My drivers are all up to date, and I've made sure my games weren't missing any files.
EDIT: Oh yeah, also made sure the game were set to use my dedicated card instead of my integrated card, and tried both setting the Physx processor to GPU and CPU, both get about the same performance (shit).
