Alright, my dad has specifically requested the following: For: photo, video editing and little to no gaming. Special Requests:

Must be quiet
Preferred USB connection in the front for easier access
He also wants a webcam to chat with me on Skype when I go to university
Prefers intel system
He has windows XP but wants to upgrade to windows 7
Wants to be able to burn lots of DVDs
Budget: $1250 CAD (ABSOLUTE MAX) Also, he has a special question: "I would like to be able to backup all my data, not my software, unless someone tells me otherwise, on a seperate harddrive, but I don't want that harddrive running all the time, I only want to run it when I backup every few days." I'm thinking a RAID1 setup would work well, since what he's requesting seems kind of impossible. He already has a monitor, but his keyboard and mouse needs to be replaced. Thanks!
External?
I think he wants it internal. When he gets home I will ask him and update the thread.
http://secure.newegg.ca/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=17592247
$1000 build with a 4650 wat
$1000 build with a 4650 wat
$850 build with a 4650. He doesn't need anything else so why waste his money? [editline]09:24PM[/editline] Ooops sorry. Forgot the OS. One sec. [editline]09:25PM[/editline] Fixed it.
Isn't HT suitable for this type of build?
Isn't HT suitable for this type of build?
He doesn't need it. It sounds like this is gonna be his e-mail PC.
get a low end i3, the stuff he's gonna be doing isnt vert demanding
get a low end i3, the stuff he's gonna be doing isnt vert demanding
Nah, i5 is perfect. [editline]10:22PM[/editline] A quad-core will help with mass photo managing.
that build looks pretty decent, thanks! [editline]10:50PM[/editline] although, anything else? :v: spending 1k is a purdy big deal [editline]10:54PM[/editline] actually, taking another look at that build: -he probably doesn't need a gaming mouse or keyboard -he says 500GB of space is plenty, so 2x500 will probably do him justice

They're just nicer than standard use ones. One sec. I'll find ya some 500GB HDDs.
Why is he building a $1000 non-gaming computer?
Probably because he's used to seeing store prices for everything.
Why is he building a $1000 non-gaming computer?
Check your e-mail in style! :haw: [editline]04:18AM[/editline] Gosh, I'm sorry. I have you links to the HDDs from the US site. One sec. bah your wishlist got all messed up the butt crack. 1k did seem a bit high though, wouldn't a nice dual core and a 48xx or something be better, if that would reduce the price by a bit
bah your wishlist got all fucked up the butt crack. 1k did seem a bit high though, wouldn't a nice dual core and a 48xx or something be better, if that would reduce the price by a bit
For that fact get an AMD 240 or 620 with 4GBs of DDR3 G. Skill Ripjaw, a HIS 4650, accompanied by a Rosewill Blackbone with those two 500GB HDDs, and finally a GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P motherboard. I estimate it should total around ~$600-650 [editline]05:21AM[/editline] Sorry about the Wishlist. I was making another build earlier and accidentally put it in the wrong list.
he did sort of want an intel system, so maybe an i5 660/661 or i3? also, aren't the rosewill PSUs shitty?
Rosewill PSUs are yes, but the Rosewill Blackbone is a case.
Rosewill PSUs are yes, but the Rosewill Blackbone is a case.
oh man, do I ever feel stupid :S
he did sort of want an intel system, so maybe an i5 660/661 or i3? also, aren't the rosewill PSUs shitty?
Is your Dad prejudice against AMD or something? There's nothing wrong with AMD. For what he's doing he doesn't need a high-end dual-core. [editline]09:36PM[/editline]
oh man, do I ever feel stupid :S
Don't worry about it. I misread all the time.
Is your Dad prejudice against AMD or something? There's nothing wrong with AMD. For what he's doing he doesn't need a high-end dual-core.
I have no clue, he just said to me, "I would like an Intel system." I realize for the stuff he's going to do, a quad-core might be too much, but a good Intel dual-core should do him well.

I highly recommend the AMD 240 or 620. Otherwise you're just wasting money.
If he's doing low-end gaming/ e-mail checking and some occasional Chess Titans. I highly recommend the AMD 240 or 620. Otherwise you're just wasting money.
OP says he also does photo and video editing
Then an i7 or i5 is a good idea if you have the money for it.
Then an i7 or i5 is a good idea if you have the money for it.
not an i7... but and i5 750, depends on how much photo/video editing he does and if its a lot at once ect
not an i7... but and i5 750, depends on how much photo/video editing he does and if its a lot at once ect
he does quite a bit of photo editing. when we go somewhere special, we usually come back with a few hundred photos which he goes through and edits. i5 750 would probably be perfect then [editline]07:43PM[/editline] btw, here's my stab at it: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128409 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102824 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341022 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115215 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211409 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136320 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823109156 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118030 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116754 i don't think i'm missing anything. sorry I couldn't save it to a public wishlist, I don't have a newegg.ca account yet :(...there's probably cheaper stuff in combos, but i'm new to building a computer from newegg, so please excuse me
bump please? [editline]01:11AM[/editline] i'm sorry, it's just I want to get my dad his computer. not to mention so I can use it as well :v:
looks good, but, if it were me getting that build, i would go with This but that just because its modular, that psu you picked out is a good one
oh i think I also forgot a case... does this fit the rest of my build: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129066 also, should I get extra case fans?
