• What to do against rootkits?

What should I install so that I can find if my PC has been infected? Also is it possible to find keyloggers in any way? Also what should I do in order to prevent my Steam accounts from being stolen? I recently got my account hijacked but I have no idea now. I'm going to reformat my PC right now and I'll soon be changing passwords on pretty much everything I have. Last but not least, should I consider moving into gmail and leave hotmail forever?
Right after reinstalling your PC with a legitimate copy of Windows , install a virus scanner. There are loads of free scanners like Avira, Avast! or MSE. I personally prefer MSE because it's lightweight and does the job just fine. It protects against viruses, spyware and malware. Further more, avoid installing malicious crap from warez sites, flash game sites, porn sites, download sites like 'software informer' etc. Password protect everything, and always install the latest security updates. If you need a piece of software and you are not sure about it's legitimacy, you can use virtualbox to test various stuff. This is for more advanced users, though.
I used Avast mostly with Malwarebytes but I am not sure if I should install something more, I'll try MSE. I already know how to use Virtualbox, used it when I wanted to test how Ubuntu is. Anyway, thanks.

It's an Ubuntu distro with the KDE work space. I installed it for several people who wanted to try something else and they are pleased with it.
