Age of Empires 2: Could not initialize graphics system.

Right. I'm currently in a car, It's nighttime, and ontop of that, it rains like hell outside. So what am I supposed to do? Play some old games on my Netbook, ofcourse!
Anyway, as I browse through my library of currently installed games, I found, to my delight, that I had installed AoE 2. "Hooray!", I think to myself, as I double click on the icon saying "Empires2.exe".
The screen flashes for 0.5 seconds, and then I'm greeted with this popup:

What am I supposed to do, FP? :ohdear:
Netbook specs:
CPU: Intel Atom N270, 1.6 GHz
GPU: Intel Mobile 945
RAM: 1GB DDR2
OS: Windows XP
Is this the only game that acts like this? Other games work fine?

Other games work just fine.
Do you have DirectX 9 installed, and do you have drivers for your graphics card installed?
If not, install these and try again.
[editline]damn[/editline]
Nevermind, got ninja'd by your reply that it didn't happen in other games, so ignore this.

AoE 2 is a 2D game, it doesn't use any form of 3D acceleration at all. :v:

I thought AoE2 used DirectDraw which is part of DirectX.
Check DXDIAG to see if DirectDraw is working properly
Also try using the Windows 2000 compatability mode.

Oh, sorry, yes, that's correct.

Done and done. DirectDraw worked properly, and the compability mode did nothing.
You playing with/out expansion packs?

But it uses DirectDraw, which existed till DX9
DX9 has DX8 in it. His directx shouldn't be the reason. AoE2 w/ the expansion is regonized as a compatible game with that device.
Things to do, or clearify
-Download latest redistribute of DX9.0.
-Download latest IGP drivers.
Reinstalled DX9 and reinstalled the drivers. Didn't help.
try running a program that forces the game to run in windowed mode. I found a program from the dark depths of the internet http://www.mediafire.com/?i4ah7a9u16odlti
Compatibility mode shouldn't be needed for AoE2, as i've run it on all operating systems i owned just fine (XP, Vista, 7, including 64bit).

Try launching it with these options.

Doesn't work.
Anything in the event viewer?
(start -> run -> eventvwr.msc)
Also are you using SP2 or 3?

Windows XP Home Service Pack 3.
Also, I decided to stop being a lazy bum and do some googling myself, and managed to accidentally enter some fake warez site, something which gave me a trojan.
Motherfucker's dead now, though.
Anyway, the point of me writing that, there's a major shitload of people who's having the same problem as I do. No idea what's causing it. I mean, the 5770 in my desktop runs it without any problems at all. (And I've got Windows 7 on that bitch. I don't even have to use any compability modes).
did you ever try runnin in windowed mode? My desktop had this problem when I brought it over to my buddies for a lan, and I use it on a friends computer to stop BSOD's

Didn't work, either.
