So last week I got a TDSS trojan. It fucked up the MBR, and corrupted key files. I replaced the corrupted files, nuked the trojan, but now I have a different problem. When the login screen loads, I get a "Could not find %hs. Please try to reinstall the program." BSOD, or something along those lines...I'm typing from memory. Windows startup repair keeps telling me that I have corrupt volumes. /device/harddisk0 volume vorrupt. No other issues are detected. I know the system isn't corrupt because I can access the data with livedisks. I've just about run out of ideas short of reinstalling. Any suggestions? (Also note: safe mode doesn't work either) [highlight](User was banned for this post ("Wrong section - use Technical Support next time" - Craptasket))[/highlight]
Sounds like you're fucked. If you can find the file that's missing and then place it in using a Linux livecd then that would probably make shit work again, but on the basis that it's saying your volume is corrupted, I would boot into the livecd and retrieve all the files you want and then just reinstall. Even if you do get through you may encounter other errors caused by the trojan. I would just back up what you need to and reinstall.
ugh I hate reinstalling :c The virus is gone, but I think it added bogus registry entries that break everything. Looks like I'm heading for a reinstall despite my best efforts. Wish me luck!
Backup/Nuke and install is the only way to go my friend. Heres something to cheer you up, Your avatar is funny as hell.
What kind of files were they before they were corrupted? Program files? Windows files?
They were windows files and random downloaded files. I reinstalled and everything is fine now, but I want to know how to fix it in the future because this is the third time it has happened. Reinstalled every time. I don't want to do that again. It happened in less than 3 seconds. Really fast moving virus. I wish it left safe mode working :(
You could've just ran [quote]bootrec.exe /fixmbr bootsect.exe /nt60 all /force attrib -h -s C:\boot\BCD del C:\boot\BCD bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd[/quote] from Startup Repair's command line. [editline]18th August 2011[/editline] Then you could've downloaded HijackThis and posted a log. [editline]18th August 2011[/editline] Reinstalling is never the only solution, my friend.

Alternatively couldn't you also run "sfc /scannow" from a remote command prompt to verify the integrity of system files and repair them if necessary? This bailed me out of a reformat once.
Nope, kept claiming that there was a system restore pending.
Do the system repair and at the end when it says done, click cancel instead of finish. Then click on command line. Also, you are running system restore from the dvd, aren't you? As for the virus, download a Kaspersky or other antivirus live-cd. [editline]19th August 2011[/editline] Guess it's too late now tho.
