Looks like they wanted to attract all the people who got pissed off when Garry used ~<1% of his Rust money to fund a small off-shoot of his workforce in their relatively low-cost endeavor to make a different game

I really wonder what we'll be saying about this game in 5 years
I really wonder what we'll be saying about this game in 5 years
What we can all agree on is, if this fails, it will hurt everything crowdfunded related very badly for a long time.
What we can all agree on is, if this fails, it will hurt everything crowdfunded related very badly for a long time.
Crowd funding has mostly had its golden age anyway, it's difficult now to succeed with it without an already enormous platform. It's mostly things that go viral on chance or emotion that benefit from crowd funding, all the failure of this will do is put a nail in the coffin. I backed Star Citizen and then a year later I ended my video game hobby entirely and I won't play this when it comes out, I'll probably just give the game away. But I still want it to succeed, I want to be able to say I made that. I never expected them to keep my money as profit. I'd be annoyed if they didn't use the money for something, even if it was a different video game. Give me my money back if you aren't going to use it.

Besides for a game that didn't need kickstarter money you would notice the development is going more smoothly than any other game you would find on early access right now. I forget but I'm not sure but I believe garry said he was using the money from garrys mod to fund rust. "We funded Rust for 1-2 years before it eventually became what it is. You bought early access to it. When you buy a pizza you aren’t funding Dominos, you’re just buying a pizza."

This game feels like a bubble. I want it to succeed, but I know people who backed it because it was backed so much. It's like seeing bitcoin, "oh man, it's going up, better buy in." I hope it doesn't pop.

Ergo massive feature creep?
I feel like its gotten to the point of not having any chance of living up to the hype
I feel like its gotten to the point of not having any chance of living up to the hype
Depends if you buy into it or not really, at the end of the day, I'll be happy if it's a Freespace 2-esque campaign with Freelancer-style multiplayer.
"So, guys, we finished literally everything we could think of for this game, but we still have $3m dollars left over... You know that open letter we said about all the money being spent on development? Yeah... what do we do now?" "Hmm... Split the $3m among all the modelers and tell them it's for developing a 3D 'Thank You!' to put in the credits!" :v:
Depends if you buy into it or not really, at the end of the day, I'll be happy if it's a Freespace 2-esque campaign with Freelancer-style multiplayer.
$55 million pre release funding is a hell of a lot of hype
Ergo massive feature creep?
They aren't just suddenly thinking of new things to include in the game once they get the money. They've already planned for them and things they are using the money for would all be included in the game at some point, having more money just lets them improve them or add them sooner. Chris Roberts explained it here: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/13284-Letter-From-The-Chairman-20-Million
Gonna quote myself from a couple weeks ago:
I can't help but look at Star Citizen and think that it's going to be the housing bubble of video games. So much hype, so much money, so many expectations, it's a recipe for either the greatest thing of all time or the biggest bust of all time.
You have to admit it would be fascinating to watch this fail for no other reason than morbid curiosity. It would be the Permian MEE of crowd funding.
I think its gonna be a great game. But people with unrealistic expectations spending thousands of dollars on internet spaceships like its gonna be some alternative to real life are gonna be disappointed. Just like how GTAV, people thought you could do anything and were disappointed but it was still a fantastic game.
Well, for what they got, I find it fun. Arena commander is getting better with each update. And the FPS portion is coming sometime soon.
