• High idle temp for SLI?
    10 replies, posted
Just got my computer I have SLI of 980 GTX The first card is around 48-49C The second is around 30C Is something wrong? I barely have any programs running
Depending on how much you have them spaced out, the second card may be obscuring the intake fans on the first card and is therefore making it harder to draw in cool air. It's a common problem with SLI, but it's not too detrimental unless the GPUs run too hot when you're under load. If you're really worried, check and see if the side of your case has any mounting points for a fan or two. If you do, you can buy one, hook it up in there, and use it to draw in more cool air for the cards to use.
I just did a benchmark test The top card got a temperature at 70 C the bottom at 40 C Should I try and get them further apart then?
[QUOTE=General;46527307]I just did a benchmark test The top card got a temperature at 70 C the bottom at 40 C Should I try and get them further apart then?[/QUOTE] If there are other available PCI-e slots on your motherboard and your SLI bridge will extend far enough, then yes, try moving your secondary card to a lower slot and see if that makes a difference. But 70C isn't that bad. Once it goes past 75C is when I would get worried.
I moved the cards further apart. I don't see any difference in temp The top card felt way hotter So if it exeeds 75C I should return it? [editline]19th November 2014[/editline] Edit: Wait I think maybe it solved it I did a heavy benchmark the temps on both cards were at 50-60 C
I wouldn't jump to that conclusion just yet. What if you took out the secondary card altogether and ran some tests using just the one? If it's still experiencing major heat issues and there's no way you can provide extra cooling to the cards (did you check for any vents on your case side panel yet?), then don't worry about it until you see the temperatures start to go past that safe point on a regular basis. [editline]19th November 2014[/editline] Oh good, I'm glad you fixed it. Like I've been saying before as well, if your case has any side vents, buy a case fan ASAP so that it can provide more cool air for your primary card.
Thank you man I'll get one tomorrow
Make sure you get one in the right size too. Chances are that it's a 120mm fan mount, as it's the standard for most case fans in this day and age, but you should read the case manual if you still have it or search your case online, read the specs, and figure out what size fan you need to put on that intake vent.
What cards are they? Spacing them apart sounds like you have non-reference cards, which aren't the best choice for a tighter sli setup.
It's the MSI Gaming version
