Damn, I thought this article was reallly about a thief scaling up a shopping building and smashing copies of a video game called Deadly Shadows
I can see how comparing sale figures to those of 10 years ago is a valid representation of the game's quality.
The new thief isn't a bad game but it doesn't have shit on Deadly shadows
I haven't played any of the other Thief's however that a side this is a pretty good game. The story and dialog are a bit cheesy for me at moment.

While it did have its moments, I thought that as a whole Deadly Shadows was the worst in the series. So far, I'm enjoying 4 more.
I haven't actually played the previous thief games, I just know I loved deadly shadows
Thief 4 is a good game, but it has nowhere the depth deadly shadows had
I bought Thief 4 for reasonable price today so I'll see how good or bad it actually is.
It doesn't surprise me it sold more, today with almost everyone with internet, digital copies, long time since the last one and looking like it's still mostly about stealth, players are going to give it a chance.
No shit the reboot is going to sell more, the actual number of players is much larger than ten years ago, and people don't have to get their fat ass out of their chair to buy games anymore.
The story was dumb and piss poor, the gameplay was alright and the looting was satisfying.

I'm confused, why don't people like the new Thief? You can customize it so that it's pretty much a shit ton more difficult than Deadly Shadows (turning off focus, HUD elements, Iron Man mode) and is actually quite fun and challenging. Is it because people are still looking through rose-tinted nostalgia glasses? Play The Metal Age again, it's really dated in a lot of parts. But bragging about beating Deadly Shadows in terms of sales is like bragging you didn't shit your pants walking to the toilet :v:
Although, I do agree with some of the criticism like the story being fucking shit and the cutscenes terribly off-sync (voices and mouths don't align and subtitles come like 10 seconds before the lines are actually said) but if the gameplay is good and solid, what's the problem?

Like many people have said, and said it far better than me:
The game was designed around those elements, focus etc. Removing them unbalances the game. People aren't complaining about the lack of difficulty, that isn't hard to come by, the problem is balance. When I played Hitman absolution the game was all around fine, but removing things like eagle vision etc made the game completely unbalanced.
Randomly removing things just isn't a well thought out system to increase the challenge, its just an option in a menu that took an hour to implement.
So have you even played the game? Because I'm playing it without focus and it's completely fine. It's nothing like Hitman where the disguises become pretty much useless if you can't use the blending in thing, removing a core gameplay aspect that Hitman is known for and just turning it into a "hide behind cover" game.
The game is not designed around focus, even if you leave it enabled you never need to upgrade or use it.
It's more about the setting than the gameplay for me. I think the Hammerites and Pagans were more important to the series than even Garret, because they were the driving force in creating that otherworldly wierdness that made the universe so unique and engrossing for me.

If you are enjoying the new one go check out 1/2, especially 1 if you want top notch writing and story.

i dont really think its built around focus. i used it once and never got around to refilling it ever on standard master difficulty. ive been selling all my poppies.

If there's the custom difficulty where there's permadeath and choices to turn off focus and HUD for bonus points, I'm inclined to disagree

Dunno. In Dishonored you can disable quest markers but it makes the game basically unplayable during some missions. Yeah the difficulty setting in Thief 4 uses that bonus points thing but that still doesn't mean it's balanced or playable as your first playthrough.

Playing any stealth game on its hardest difficulty during a first playthrough is retarded anyways

You got that backwards.
