Hi-Rez could've called the single-payment option every damn thing in the world, and what do they choose? Game of the Year Edition!
Talk about a status that completely lost every semblance of value, it's like these days even eroges that teach tolerance and understanding through rape could have GOTY editions.
i like this game a lot
Yeah this game hit free to play critical mass very quickly (the point where the need to create new content to drive sales necessarily causes imbalance and community outrage)
It's a damn shame, the game started out so strong but flopped after the 2nd or 3rd major content patch. Hi-rez tries so hard to please their fans too, it's awful for everyone that it worked out like this. Although, deciding not to include a replay system for the game was dumb and completely their fault.

After checking the patch notes, it looks like they're really trying to fix stuff that annoyed players like "Why use mortars to bomb base assets when you can fire in a straight line with a spinfusors and kill them almost as easily without having to aim in an arc?"
All weapons have been rebalanced against shielded base assets. Some weapons, such as Mortar Launchers, Arx Busters, and Grenades are very effective vs shielded assets, and deal enough damage to blast directly through the shields. Weapons such as Spinfusors do not deal enough damage to push through shields before they recharge, and as such require multiple players shooting at the same time to cause damage.
good on them
Doesn't the game still have a steady playerbase though?
Doesn't the game still have a steady playerbase though?
Yeah it's nowhere close to dead but at the same time it's nowhere near what it used to be
There was SO much more they could have done with this game. They have some really skilled people on the dev team and they could have turned this into a classic. I really wish they didn't do the free2play bullshit with this game. It didn't deserve that horrible treatment.
Hirez sucks nuts at balancing though. That I can say.
I think it's actually a good thing they went the f2p route, they got way more players into the game this way that they would otherwise. While Tribes was an acclaimed franchise, it simply wasn't popular enough, if it was a full priced game most of the people buying it on release would be fans of the franchise, which there aren't that many of. The community would've died much quicker that way. Unless they released the game with full modding support so the community could fix up the flaws and introduce fresh content, but we all know that's unlikely.

They really should've fixed up the game to the point it's going to be at this patch before officially releasing it, only recently have they begun actually listening to the community.
by the way these are crucial changes coming in this patch
- Raider’s White Out grenade has been changed, and no longer causes blindness. It now disables HUD icons on players, and disables Turrets for 5s to 6.25s depending on upgrade. If the turret is shielded, is also drops its shield making it more vulnerable.
white out is no longer retarded
- Mines now have a soft “edge glow” around them, to make them more visible.
mines aren't camouflaged anymore
- Sentinel’s BXT rifles have been made more effective when not in scope, damage raised to 125. (Scope still charges for higher damage).
bxt is slightly more useful now but still not as good as the sap
-RockBounceFullSpeedThreshold
RockBounceGraceAngle
RockBounceFalloffAngle
ROCK BOUNCING IS BACK BABY

I disagree, the F2P critical mass problem is just too awful and one thing the breathed so much life into T2 was the modability. With the F2P model they can't allow modding without undermining their profits so the F2P model killed that too.

Like I said, a full retail release could've worked well if they included full modding support, but do you really think they would actually do that?

Yes, because that largely contributed to T2's success.

Mods, no
Maps, possible future.
So do you actually have to win any awards to throw out a GOTY version?

It also says "Plays best on Alienware" so I don't know who to trust.

That's because they have a sponsorship deal with them.
