There aren't many good comedy movies and one where eSports is the theme surely can't be any good.
I've never seen a company outside of actual game developers make a decent games related film
It always comes off as forced and sometimes it's bad enough to where I'll just stop watching something because it's so embarrassingly bad that I actually cringe every time they force out a reference

Wreck it Ralph was pretty good though

I think it was only good because it wasn't based on a real game at all. It just had references to great games but a pretty original story.

Similar to games. Most of the ones based directly on movies aren't as good as ones with original stories inspired by movies.
It's really all about making new things from the same roots rather than shoehorning established IPs into an entirely different media hoping it's going to work.

I forgot about Wreck-It Ralph to be honest, but there's a difference between seeing Bowser, M. Bison, Eggman, and a Pac-Man Ghost at a Bad-Anon meeting (when two out of three are dead silent and take nothing away from the film if you don't know who they are) and hearing something like this shit:

One is a subtle nod to franchises people know and love and the other is "LOOK WE PLAY VIDEOGAMES TOO HAVE A CULTURAL REFERENCE ENJOY"

It depends on the level of intelligence you assume your audience has. W-IR is the equivalent of having a nice conversation with you and everything else seems to be equivalent of a pet-owner saying "HERE BOY, GET THE STICK" to their dog, which is quite frankly insulting and not something I want to see.
The only esports focused film that I've seen that I enjoyed and that actually knew what it was talking about was the Pure Pwnage film. If they can manage to respect the sport and actually research their terminology then this movie might turn out okay.

My theory is that arcade games are old enough that the people who made Wreck it Ralph had genuine personal memories about arcades. eSports are too new, still too contained in its own subculture, and there's probably nobody involved with this movie at a creative level who actually knows or cares about eSports.

I think this is the only way a game related movie can work. Make it based on a game BUT make it a complete original story that maybe even takes in-universe stories into account and makes references to it. You know, like expanding the story of a game.
