what what do they expect people to talk about? they can't talk about a single player rpg every day
I love this game, but I always get so far in it just to have my characters skill tree reset after an update which is super annoying.

In any case, the writer is definitely a bit of a doofus. PoE is going strong and to only just now realize it's really quite good is beyond embarrassing for a video game journalist, although it's not like journalism for video games has much of a bar anymore
I love this game, but I always get so far in it just to have my characters skill tree reset after an update which is super annoying.
I do feel like the constantly balancing, despite being a really good thing, really needs to be handled better than resets every few months. I've gotten to the point where I can redo my builds fairly quickly but if like me you play about 100 games at any given time it can get excessive

This new expansion is adding some really interesting new content, which I'm surprised this article didn't go into. I mean, the title of the article is "Path of Exile is good, but The Awakening expansion might make it great," but they don't mention any of the new features that will be included in the expansion. Goofy! The game isn't quite as punishing as the article makes it out to be either. It's challenging, for sure, and a well-planned build is still critical to surviving higher difficulties, but GGG has done a lot of optimization to the skill tree and various enemy types to allow for more flexibility in builds and playstyles. It's also not too hard to find or trade for a crafting/currency item (there is no gold in Path of Exile. Currency is in crafting items) that you can redeem to refund a spent skill point. While it'd be stupidly expensive to rebuild your entire character like that, simply tweaking a handful of your skillpoints along the way as you discover that you need a little bit more of one thing and a little bit less of another, is a pretty easy thing to do. That's especially true with the dozen or so free skill refund points you earn through quests along the way. You could pretty easily beat the entire main quest on the first two difficulties with a hobbled-together, play-it-by-ear build. You only need to plan in serious detail if you want to get through the final difficulty and run end-game content. The new expansion should open up even more flexibility and customization in character building. The massive shared skill tree opens up about a bazillion potential builds, but you are limited by a few factors: you have to follow the tree through its winding paths node-by-node, and some of the nodes you want to grab may be far away from other nodes you want to use, with a lot of wasted points in between them. One of the features of the new expansion is introducing items that can be socketed into your skill tree that allow you to work around that. One item lets you jump between points on the tree, so you can completely bypass certain areas and lots of wasted points in order to get where you want.Another item, apparently, allows all melee bonuses within a certain radius of the gem's location on the skill tree to apply to bow damage (though it's not explained for some reason), which in itself could open some huge potential. Depending on how it's worded, that alone could open up a couple of very fun builds that were previously difficult to use without stupid expensive gear to get their damage up. Path of Exile is an incredibly deep game, and if you're a fan of ARPG's it is definitely worth checking out.

Also setting up a way to get to the fascinating content of maps earlier would be nice instead of having to beat it 3 times.
This game has a lot of cool mechanics, but I could never get into it because the rest of it just couldn't carry the game long enough for me to get to the point where I could actually play with said mechanics.
