Hey guys, I've got a 965 with a 212 Evo cooler on it - how do you think that'll hold up for 'future' (2014-early 2015) games? I usually overclock to 4.0Ghz, but I've heard it's a pretty budget performer chip. In that vein, if I were to upgrade I'd prefer to keep it in the AM3+ socket so as to avoid pulling everything out again. In that thought, I was planning on buying this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16819113286 Also taking recommendations for video cards. Right now I run a XFX 6850, and it's not aging so well. I was considering upgrading with a 7850, as it's cheap and a little bit of a boost (that or 7850 crossfire, but for that price I might as well go with a 7950), but the 7870 is only a teensy bit more expensive. Honestly, I've never researched Nvidia cards so I have no clue what their equivalent is, so that's the only reason I didn't list any. So, in summary: 965BE vs Vischera FX 6300 and 6850 vs 7850 vs 7870! Thanks a bunch guys.
As for the CPU you won't see a difference, the 6300 is only a little better, and that would be a waste of money especially since you are overclocked at 4.0 so you probably get a little better than shown here http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/102?vs=699 But you might want to consider going a few steps up from the 6300 to like a 8350 or 4670 for some real performance increase. 6850 vs. 7850 http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/539?vs=549 7850 vs 7870 http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/539?vs=549 Nvidia equivalent for 7850-GTX 650 Ti Boost http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/778?vs=782 Nvidia equivalent for 7870-GTX 660 http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1034?vs=1039 Or the GTX 760 if you spend like $50 more than the 7870 I think. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1034?vs=1038 But what is your budget I could give you a better list if I knew what you were willing to spend and what country you are in? Also what PSU wattage and brand?
I could have sworn I heard some less-than-favorable things about Piledriver and Bulldozer. Since I don't want to swap motherboards, I can't see getting the 4670, but that 8350 looks pretty slick. Thanks! I'm surprised the 7870 is as powerful as it is... but the differences between the 7850 and 7870 seem pretty 'eh'. Do you think it's worth the extra forty bucks? I play windowed mode usually around 1280x800 just because I hate alt-tabbing, so I get the feeling the differences will be almost negligible (which raises the same concerns about the 760 versus the 7850). As far as budget, I try to keep it on the lower side, around $400 plus or minus a bit. I live in the US, so no worries there (I guess?). Power supply is a Raidmax 630w (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817152035). Surprisingly nice for what it cost, honestly.
Hold out on upgrading your CPU for a while if it's oc'd to 4ghz anyways. As for GPU, if you have the money I'd suggest a GTX760, as it's quite a bit better than the 7870 that AMD offers. Then again if you're playing at 1280x800, then tbh you'd be fine even with an R7 260x. Gigabyte R7 260x - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125486 or http://amzn.com/B00FONIOAG Edit: Also found a 3D Mark Firestrike result with your CPU + 260x http://www.3dmark.com/fs/1567259
The FX line is kind of eh but if you get a 8320 or 8350 it does fairly well. ( a good bit better than what you have now) and as for your GPU since you only game at 800p and usually windowed I would say a 7850 will do just fine for want you want. But I was looking at some of the 7850s and I can only find a few and they are like $180 so I would recommend just getting an GTX 660 in that case it's $180 as well and a little increase over the 7850. I guess now even the mid range AMD cards are getting hiked up in price because everything is like $30-$50 more expensive than just a few weeks ago. But if you don't play games like BF4, Crysis 3, and other harder to run titles you may be fine downgrading to a 260X as stated above. If you play games like these, just get a GTX 760 and do not upgrade the CPU and mobo right now, but if you want to upgrade the link below gives a good idea of cost. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2QY9c Now I'm not the best with the AMD side of the motherboards so someone else might have better input on that than me. But it's right around the best I could do with your budget and what you want. I changed the 8350 to an 8320, only difference in the 8320 is clocked at 3.5 and the 8350 is clocked at 4.0 but you save $40.
And watch out with that PSU. Raidmax isnt know to be all that great.
