• Can I get a virus without opening the file?

Someone on Steam sent me a goo.gl link, I followed it and it downloaded a file called Screenshot.scr and I deleted it as it felt obvious it's a virus, and I scanned with malwarebyte's anti malware, AVG anti virus and Kaspersky TDSSKiller. Is it safe if I never ran the file?
Unless I am mistaken, the Screenshot.scr file could still run in the background, so make sure there is no background process of it open by opening Task Manager. If you wanna be extra sure, I have heard that rebooting your PC will cause the process to turn off, effectively making you safe. I think the file will start even if you don't open it, but I am not 100% sure.
Okay I've restarted my computer and scanned again and it doesn't return anything so I think I'm safe :)
Did this come via s Steam message by any chance? I've had random weird messages before with a link to a scr file. Didn't click on it though.
.scr files can't autorun, you should be fine. it's essentially another name for .exe that's used specifically for screensavers.
Yeah, as long as you didn't run it and got rid of it completely you'll be fine. A person on Steam sent me the same link, and as soon as I saw the extension in the choose download location window I instantly knew something was fishy and shut him down. That's why you always turn off automatic downloading, so if anyone tries to slip you something like that you can look at it before you download it.
You're just lucky it wasn't a java driveby or something of a similar vein.

These exploits have been running around via Steam messages for a while, mostly as "screenshots" for marketplace items. I forgot how slow the H&S subforum is.
