Despite its quirks, I love BDO to death. It doesn't feel anything like WoW or the hundred clones that came after, and that alone has me hooked.

You sound like any other mmo junky looking for his next fix of mmo play and then new WoW expansion comes out and this game didn't even exist in your life. Repeated cycle.

That's awfully presumptuous of you.
On topic: Still waiting on them to expand beyond the US and Europe.

Yeah, maybe, minus the WoW part; I've never subbed. I've always been trying to find an MMO that feels more like "make your way in this virtual world" and less "you're the chosen one, run these quests alongside 10,000 other chosen ones and then do some dungeons." BDO is the best example of that since Runescape (excluding EVE, which just isn't for me), so I'll probably stick around until something better rolls in.

Star Wars Galaxies was great as well.

Star Wars Galaxies was literally the best example of this pre 2006. Choose a starting planet, get pushed off the ship and told 'there you go, go and do what you like!'. Ability to make characters completely revolving around numerous crafting specializations, dancing/music, combat, medicine, scienc-y stuff.
Pity even with the emulator it really hasn't aged too well and all niche MMOs that have tried to replicate its formula have failed.
there was a game like that called face of mankind back in the day. it was pretty unique in that there were no NPCs in the game, and that the only interaction and combat was with other players. there were a bunch of factions you could join that had different roles, but other than that the game was completely driven by player politics. i don't think there was any progression like in a traditional mmo, but it was still really awesome for it's time.

Before the CU and NGE came along, SWG was pretty great. A real MMO where it and you are what you make it, with options for everything, and it was very social. Social being good since I'm talking about 2003, Before the generation of LOLUMAD?
Neocron 2 was one I remember being pretty open about what you could do. I don't remember much of a plot at all, and it was basically, "Go fuck around in a Cyberpunk MMO."
