Right now I am using a 2008 Radeon 4870 X2, and while it still works pretty well to this day, every new game that comes out runs worse and worse on my computer and it's time to update.
I'm looking for the best video card I can get performance wise (Preferably Nvidia, I haven't had a great experience with ATI over the years) within a 800$ budget. I have been told by friends that a GTX 680 would be the way to go, but I'd like to get a second opinion here before I go spend several hundred dollars on a card.
My specs: (In case I am horribly wrong and it turns out I just need more ram or some shit/if there is a card that will work unusually well with my setup etc)
OS: Windows 7
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 945 (3 GHZ)
RAM: 8gb DDR2
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC. M4A77D (AM2)
I appreciate the help
Save and update your whole build, any high end card will be bottlenecked to hell and back with your current system.

We need your PSU wattage and brand too.
Annyways like Holycrap said. Your cpu is getting a bit old, and ddr2 memory signifies a very old mobo.
You might want to upgrade to a new cpu and mobo in the near future. Hell with 800$ maybe even now.
You can get A GTX 670 now and play games on max settings (though your max fps will be bottlenecked by the cpu) and update your cpu when haswell (new intel cpu line) comes out in a few months.
Or just wait and update everything at once.
(Oh and dont get a 680, just get a 670 and overclock it a bit.)

My power supply is 600W, it's a "Cooler Master" brand, model RS-600-PCAR
So I am gathering that I need a new CPU, which one should I choose whilst still being able to afford the 670?
Don't buy just a new CPU and GPU, your board still uses DDR2 RAM which undoubtedly means if you're looking for an upgrade, you're going to be much happier in the end upgrading literally everything.
Fuck. I guess I'll be waiting another year or two for an upgrade.
Either way, I appreciate the help.
No need to wait a year.....
You can get a new cpu, mobo, ram and gpu for 800$
Go for 3570k, 8gb ddr3 1600, asus p8z77 pro, and gtx 670

Bam, $9 over your limit, full overhaul.
i dont understand why people recommend ivy bridge performance increase is minimal (avg 4% increase clock-per-clock basis, almost non existent in gaming) and overclocking potential is significantly reduced without warrant voiding moddifications

Because the Sandy Bridge i5-2500k is only $10 cheaper
I actually have 1000$, but was trying to avoid spending all of it as I am going on a trip with my family later this year and want some spending money for it.
But If I can upgrade my entire computer for 1000$, then I'm in. Much appreciated, Protocol.
You could also wait till haswell comes out with the CPU
Magmacow for 1000$ get what protocol suggest, changing the mobo for the p8z77-v Pro or Deluxe versions, and the videocard for a gtx680, that should cost exactly 1000$
The X4 945 is a perfectly acceptable CPU, I'm using a X4 955 and it runs pretty much all games with little problem so I dunno why you guys are suggesting he spend a ton of cash on a CPU that is only slightly better.
Spend the money on a GTX 670 and save the rest for when you really need an upgrade.

I don't think the pro or deluxe comes with the free RAM, but yeah, with asus boards get the top of the line stuff.
Also lol the i5-3570k poops on the X4 945

If your Intel® Brand Processor has excrement leaving it, I would advise you to call tech support immediatly and ask what is going on, if it wasn't just something you modded on it - I'm sure they'll take it back and give you a new one - without this 'feature'.

We're not fully 100% sure when it's coming out and IV is a great upgrade.
I'd go ahead and go for it. a 3570k really is effectively top of the line, unless you go to SB-E.

3570k isn't a ton of cash. Also you need a good processor to feed that new 670.
You could also get a Fx 8350 and a HD 7950 or 7970. Dont know if that would save a lot money though.

It wasn't literal.

Literally would double his performance CPU side, not even counting going from a HD 4870 to a GTX 670

I know, I was just trying to be funny =(
slight? ha, and you must be running low-med graphics. 955 is outdated. 3570k stomps it.
I don't understand why people bash the drivers of either amd and nvidia, I have never had any problems with my gpu drivers ever.

I've alternated between both cards for years now, and nVidia's drivers are slightly better...
Plus you get Physx, which is a gimmick but still if comparing two equal-performing cards at the same price I'd take nvidia...

I still can't install CCC on my HD 6850, i5-2500k computer at home. :v:

It might be 'outdated' but it still runs everything I throw at it while being quite a bit cheaper, until things start not running properly the Phenom II is still a very good processor if you're on a budget.
All I'm saying is the op should wait until his processor is not cutting it anymore before upgrading the whole thing.
Dude I thought my old Athlon was still cutting it, but I upgraded to an i5-2500k and it was night and day difference.

I bet the newer and newer games get, you're lowering your graphics to keep up. Or running on med to low for games. The phenom is outdated, and shouldn't be bought if people are looking to play today's games at more than decent fps with high graphics. The price difference is more than worth it from the phenom 2 for a 3570k.
I think people should either buy Fx8350 or an i5 its good enough for gaming.
