ok I just used Easeus partition manager, and partitioned a couple new spaces for ubuntu which I was in the process of installing. once I restarted the computer it spent a while making the new partitions in Easeus partition manager, and after it restarted again, I get this message: <windowsroot>\system32\hal.dll missing please re-install file I tried copying the offending file from another computer, and sticking it into that directory from my pre-install ubuntu, like the trial version or whatever, and still no good. Anyone know how to solve this? my brother is pissing his pants because he's addicted to the computer and I messed it up.
Could you please be more specific about what changes you have done? What does your partition table look like now? (A screenshot via Gparted oughta do) It sounds like you did something to royally piss windows off. Its possible you corrupted your hal.dll (Hardware Abstraction Layer) or etc... Here's what I would do, step by step. - Backup any data you want saved off your windows partition via linux. - Delete your windows partition via Gparted and re-create it. - Re-install windows to its partition - Re-install linux to its existing partitions (so you have GRUB again) Use the dual boot system from then on and stop playing with partitions. Or if you do, at least keep everything backed to an external hard drive.
You need to boot into your windows install/recovery disc and choose "startup repair". It's a common problem for partitioning.
