S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky (Steam) complains about Pixel Shader
17 replies, posted
So, I installed Clear Sky today, but when trying to play it I instantly get an error message saying "Your video card doesn't support Pixel Shader 1.1 or higher". I have 3.0, so I don't see why there would be a problem. Tried to reinstall drivers, both standard and beta, I have googled on the problem, but no solution works for me. Even tried to reinstall Dot Net 3.5, still no change.
Other games works fine, like Shadow of Chernobyl, any source games.
Specs if needed (from dxdiag):
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P7550 @ 2.26GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.3GHz
Memory: 4096MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 2790MB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 11 (not really)
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M
And it's a Macbook Pro 13" (Running Windows 7 with bootcamp)
inb4 mac sucks, macs is the reason for the problem.
Currently redownloading/reinstalling it.
Thanks in advance.
Did u try updating the game ? :/

Steam downloads the latest version automatically. It's a fresh download.
Not sure .. but maybe old drivers would help ..
or ur macbook is fucking up .. dld xp sp3 and install it

I don't think that's it. Why would older drivers magically make it work?
edit:
thats a mobile card .. i dont know about em :D sorry
edit2:
get windows :D

You'd be surprised, that's usually a temporary fix for A LOT of things...
Update video card drivers and DirectX
DirectX

Yo video card (i took the liberty of selecting your 9M card)
http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook_winxp_197.16_whql.html
Not really sure if the DirectX one will work, it says 9.0c and previous, i think you should be good, so try it anyways...
And the video card drivers, idk what will happen cuz it's a mac... should be fine...BECAUSE YOU BOUGHT A MAC OVER A PC SO YOU THINK ITS BETTER RITE? AND ITS PERFECT? loljk
If that doesn't work... try running it on DirectX10 or 9.0c... Idk if you can do this for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. To do this go to the My Games tab in steam, (where you launch them)
Right click S.T.A.L.K.E.R.>>Properties>>General TAB>>Set Launch Options
A box will pop up... try typing in -dxlevel 1000 for 10 or -dxlevel 900 for 9.
I do not know if the above will work, it's what i do sometimes for SOURCE games, not anything else...
My friend uses parallels, the latest one, and he doesn't really have any problems with any of his games, mind you, just like you, he plays source games, not anything that utilizes heavy duty stuff like clear sky, with all its crazy DX10'ness.
Well
hes on bootcamp thats like emulating windows 7 .... wtf ? thats not even a real windows
thats why im saying to get real windows ..
I think it has something to do with the shaders of the game. I had the same problem when I installed some custom shaders but after I uninstalled them everything worked fine. Try digging around the gamedata folder and find out the problem in the "shaders" section.
???
dxdiag says so, even though there is no support for it on that video card.
Will try the command out as soon as it's finished dloading. (Why did I delete that folder impulsively.)

I have, a part of my googling. Didn't fix anything for me, but apparently did for some back in '08. :/

Laptop = Windows Laptop

Macbook = Mac :D
Jesus H. Christ, the sheer stupidity in this thread is almost tangible.
Well, if you're running a fresh clean copy of CS and with the latest drivers and updates, there's no real reason why it shouldn't be working.
According to http://forums.filefront.com/s-t-l-k-e-r-cs-problems-errors-help/393108-pixel-shader-error-after-game-reinstalled.html you can delete the STCS folder in My Documents, or manually edit a game config file.

From what I gather, it's not actually related to your Pixel Shader, the game engine just happens to give that error if you set your graphic settings too high for your card to handle.
BTW, I found those by googling.
There was no ssao in user.ltx, so I added it, like others have. No difference.
I have changed various other related settings, like the preset. Still the same.
Oh, and there is no STCS folder in My Documents, probably because it hasn't even gotten to the Main Menu.
I'm not as desperate as I was before, but I'm still curious as to why this is even possible. I have yet to download it to my PC, since it is N/A quite often.
