Recorded HD L4D2 video via FRAPS, looking for a compressor
49 replies, posted
Since FRAPS spat out a 3 GB video after I was done, I was wondering if anyone knew of an excellent compressor (free would be nice) that won't take an hour to compress.
I would also like to know, I have alot of footage I can't upload to Youtube due to the size of the clips :(
VirtualDub

Download a trial of a video editor and then scale it down. It (vegas 9.0) scaled my would be bandwidth killing 1 gb Borderlands video into a uploadable 31mb.
Not even kidding!

You should also try VirtualDub and get the K-Lite Codec pack incase you don't want to download a trial software.
Tried Virtualdub first. It said it would take 30 minutes to render/compress the video down to 130 MB (using divX), which is pretty nice. Going to compress it now and see how it looks afterwards.
Just make a demo, play the demo and record it in avi using (startmovie avi "name") and then compress it.

The resolution is much lower though. :colbert:

Because 1280x720 is a horrible res for youtube, right?
video editors like sony vegas are great for this.
download the klite codec pack for a nice selection but i personally use the x264vfw codec, really good quality for a teeny size

Estimated time with x264vfw is 47 minutes, rendering at 7.08 fps, which is better than I expected. Using Divx didn't turn out too well, so I'm trying this next.

How did you do that?
For me Vegas doesn't do any compression.

You probably rendered to an uncompressed file, or rendered a file that's already compressed.

But uhm just wondering. You recorded some L4D2 footage, and you're intending to upload it, without any editing at all? What will the video be about? It's not very interesting to see just yet another gameplay video.
I just use Windows Movie Maker to compress videos.

Even though you use the HD option, the outputs quality is kinda low

Oh, no, it's going to be edited. I'm just checking to see what I can compress it with first before I do anything with it. It's going to be a mixture of a subtitle Let's Play (my voice is not gruff and manly enough) and a cinematic tour of L4D2.

So bump up the bitrate?
x264vfw turned out pretty well. I'll use it for now unless someone can suggest something better.

just tweak the x264vfw slider till you get the quality/size you want :D

It's just that after you render it from your video editor, the quality will go down. Why not just use whatever video editor you're using now to compress the files?
x264vfw is also ideal for youtube

Hmm, that wasn't an option in the WMM i used to use. Are you talking about the new one cause i haven't tried that.
Oh, if you're going to edit it I would suggest lagarith lossless codec. it's perfect quality.

I made the project file 1280x720 and then inserted my video and rendered!
Well, here are the results of my efforts. I got around to uploading the video about 20 minutes ago, so it's still processing, but I've used Annotations to my advantage to create the first episode of L4D2Tour.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARAapu1QT-o
When it's finished processing, it'll be available in HD (or HQ, whichever) and such, but for now you'll have to stick to regular quality.

The HD has just started to render so give it a minute before trying it in HD.

Aspect ratio is wrong, 4:3 instead of 16:9, and the quality of the video is actually not very good.
Super
it's all around great for converting & compressing EVERYTHING, I use it for compressing my 3 minute 80mb Ableton Live music files to around 5mb. so I'm quite sure it will work for videos and it's completely free so it wont hurt to try it.
Movie maker.
Seriously, Simple Import>export maneuver
If you are planning on encoding just on file in Fraps ready for YouTube I suggest you use H.264 Encoder, It's a free lightweight program that easiliy can encode files using the h264 codec.

example video I made with it.

If you're planning on using multiple files in one video I reccomend you use Sony Vegas 9.0 it has a wide range of output codecs and retains low file size and great quality.

^ Yeah I always use H.264, very easy to use and produces excellent quality at low filesize.
WMM compression sucks, I want to know how to make a good compression in Vegas.
