I just got my beautiful new HP Mini 311, and I want to dual-boot with a Linux system, preferably Ubuntu. I seen a few things that have led me to believe Linux doesn't work well with netbooks, so what precautions should I take and am I able to use Ubuntu?
Thank you very much.
Linux works very well on netbooks. When netbooks first got public attention, most even came with Linux preinstalled.
Oh...
Okay, cool thanks :)
You got it the other way around. Windows is terrible on Netbooks.
I just installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my Asus eeePc 1000he and it runs quite awesome. One note about UNR is that your desktop is a lot different than the normal kind, I am actually liking it, but if you want to change it just install KDE or whatever.
No need to Hijack the thread, but I was interesting in asking about the same topic.
What linux distro uses the least amount of resources (Ram/cpu) and what would be the best for a netbook?
Anything with an XFCE desktop environment, fluxbox, openbox, etc. consume less resources than a Gnome desktop environment or KDE.
The only tricky thing about netbooks and Linux is creating a bootable USB stick if you don't have an external CD/DVD-rom drive, and getting the wireless and webcam working. Wireless can be a real bitch with some Broadcom chipsets, just a warning.
The XFCE version of Sidux makes a really good netbook distro.
Linux doesn't run good on a netbook? Someone's been listening to Best Buy too much. I've been running Ubuntu on my ASUS EEE 900 for, well, ever since the 900 has come out.
Reinstalled every 6 months because I'd prefer reinstalling than going through a distro upgrade - but I prefer it that way bc it gives me a chance to clean out my box.
Precautions? As long as you have no valuable data, there is nothing you can mess up. Unless you managed to update the bios and turn the computer off halfway through. Just install ubuntu netbook remix.
I once knew a lady who was convinced a bunch of 8 year olds destroyed the motherboard of her computer just by playing games.
I had ubuntu netbook remix on a netbook, but I gave up on trying to get a Vodafone Mobile Connect dongle/software working, I tried everything
