• Best bang for your buck laptop?

So I'm getting a new laptop for Christmas, but I'm completely out of the loop on laptop prices (everything seems overpriced as hell) My upper limit on my budget is $1,000, but I'd prefer to stay around the $600 mark unless it's a really good deal. Primary use will be college and (lots of) programming, with some gaming (no AAA FPS games, but being able to run Dota 2 is a bonus). I want to emphasize I'm looking for the best spec to price ratio, rather than a mega-laptop that'll last me for 8 years.
Lenovo Y510P.
I've been getting that answer a lot, and I'm probably going to end up going with it, but are there any great deals at the lower spec/price end of the market? I'm also looking for a cheap laptop for someone else. Also for college, but it won't see much gaming, maybe the original portal at most. Mostly used for web browsing, facebook, and schoolwork. The only requirement for this one is a network card that isn't total shit.

Well yeah, but I'm trying to find the absolute best deal. The same applies for the second laptop.
