First of all - Hello guys!
Second - Virginmedia is unrelayable, have poor service and did not satisfy me for around 40quid per month.
Bad quality, Low speed after 17:00 till 23:00, on weekends can't use internet at all. Highest speed if im literarly next to router is like 5mbps.
So, since im moving in another apartment and want to start everything from fresh page, please guys suggest me - whats going to be better:
Sky;
BT.
Im going to take fibre one, so Its going to go directly in my main machine.
I am going to stream while playing online games, watch videos in background, listen music from youtube and buffer videos on my 2 TVs.
Also some mobile devices what are updating nearly 30min what eats my Megabites.
What are you using guys, what do you like and prefer, or even if you didnt, what company you wish to switch on?
Thanks!
I currently have Sky and have had nothing but problems. At one point it got so bad I had a 3/400kbps speed and the customer service is terrible. After phoning around 5 different times, all the other times it was the same story of "change your wireless channel" when I told them countless times it's not going to change anything (I'd already done it multiple times). Then that same person assured me he was "mapping my network better" whilst he was talking about league of legends to me, after around 5 minutes he put the phone down and nothing changed. Since then they offered me a fibre package for the same price I was paying for broadband, it started off peaking around 3MBps but is now around 1Mbps. Also Sky's routers are awfully out of date and almost completely featureless. I am switching soon.
Edit:
Another note on the customer service, once you've phoned them enough times, you learn their script. Unfortunately their script must have ended at "restart the router", of which they pass you on to an "expert" who's script ends with league of legends and telling me "you're network is mapped better now, bye!"
The best "expert" I had was trying to tell me my firewall on my computer was clashing with my antivirus and that was slowing my entire network down.
Oh god, so sky is same as virginginging media. Both of them do same. They just disrespect and ignore paying customers. But next to sainsburys in that vm tent they nearly lick my bumole shiny just to join them.
Uhh I guess Im going to BT? Eh?
ok so here's the thing
in the UK there are exactly 2 fibre broadband networks: BT Openreach and Virgin Media.
BT both sell direct and share their network so Sky, TalkTalk, PlusNet, EE, O2.... are all essentially BT Openreach. Different companies pay for a different level of service to resell but generally you get the same broadband no matter which 'provider' you choose.
Virgin are the exception that decided to install their own fibre lines, and do not resell network capacity. In principle this means it's a less crowded network, but it also means that the customer is paying more for the installation and maintenance of those lines. It should handle better capacity, but I've found that Virgin oversell their network's capability hoping that most of the time it won't actually be used.
Both of you however are reporting bad wireless performance - that's different. You may actually be getting fantastic service but the connection breaks down once it gets to your home. To truly get a sense of how well your internet connection is performing you need to use an ethernet connection to the router. Many factors affect wireless performance - other routers near you, location of you and the router, your wireless card/antenna, amount of copper in the walls etc etc - use wireless as a convenience, not the primary way to access the internet.
-Oh forgot to mention an alternative is getting broadband via a 4G mobile connection, which currently average around 12Mbps down 5Mbps up. This is currently new and expensive but may become a true competitor to low end fibre broadband in the future.
Apologies I wasn't very clear with my rant. I only use wireless on my phone and such obviously, however my PC is hooked up via Ethernet, though the connection was around 100kbps better it was still only around 500kbps.
