Since Quake 3 Engine is under GPL v2, Would I be allowed turn it into my own game and sell it?
As long as it stays open source I don't see why not?
I mean, if I made a game using the open source Q3 engine, I could sell it on steam without violating gpl?

Your modified version would have be licensed as GPLv2, which means you'd have to give out the source.
That would only apply to the engine, all the artwork doesn't have to be free. This is what id still does. You can get the code for their engines, but you have to buy the artwork and everything required to play their games.

Sounds good.
was the doom 3 source ever released? I heard that was due out at some point.

The Id Tech 4 engine (Quake 4, Doom 3, Prey, and a few others) is due out whenever Rage is released (supposedly sometime this year). It'll be released under the GPL, just like the other engines.
infinity ward did it and they earned like 1 billion dollars.

Though they could have bought a licence, since if they're earning that much, buying a licence worth a few hundreds of thousands of dollars wouldn't be a huge hit.
It may sound easy to make game in open source engine, but it's not. Just letting you know~
Ill just buy a cheapo license from the creator or DX-Quake3, pretty cheap and I wouldn't have to give out my code.
DXQuake3 is not a new game, or a mod. Its purpose is purely educational (and cool). It is also not perfect code - I wrote it in 5 months, whilst learning DirectX at the same time.
Doesn't sound like the ideal engine for a commercial game.

True, I will just use the original code, Im open. if anyone wants to see my Source code they can have it...
Quake 3 in DirectX already sounds bad.

Quake 3 with the right plugins can look like crysis.

What.

No it can not.

Have you tried?
This is Nexuiz, which is arguably the best looking Quake 3 engine mod.
It looks better than Quake 3, but its not even close to Crysis.
