It would be an interesting idea, but I'm not really sure if it would be living up to its full potential in a passive form of media.
Why would it be any different than the failing push for 3D in theaters?
Besides, an important aspect of VR is the headtracking, something that can't be replicated in movies as easily as in games.

I agree with the rest of the article though, VR has many more applications than games.

I think i'd be super neat in a sort of cloverfield style movie where you are the camera, and you can experience it which ever way you want by looking around.

I suppose that would be possible in a CG environment, I don't see a way to make it work with real life actors though.

The only problem is every cinema should then have a quantum supercomputer to render the movie in realtime.
Interactive stories and titles with little to no gameplay like Ethan Carter or Penumbra would undeniably benefit from Occulus. I think a full movie even in CGI where all you can do is look around in real time would be a fun gimmick but it'd ultimately get boring after like an hour or so. Interactivity is still required for VR to be interesting.

There is the 360 cameras, but I'm not sure how it would work with a crew or the dual viewports on a VR headset. You could always restrict their head rotation to some percentage of the 360 view to allow for some crew behind the camera though

Either that or you tone down the graphical fidelity to that of a game.
How about start with the logical. GTA V FPVR.
Films are a bad fit. The entire point of a film is that everything shown to you is important, you don't want to look in one direction and miss something important happening in another. The idea they had a while about about putting panoramic cameras in stadiums so you could be in the crowd virtually is much more promising I think. You can't direct a film when the person viewing it can be looking in any 180x180 degree direction, assuming you don't want people turning around which just further complicates things.
Simulators will work well with the Rift, provided they're first person, like ARMA, racing games, and walking simulators where there's no a lot happening at once.

use a dome camera and overlap the pictures. just like google earth.

How would a stereoscopic dome camera work?

[del]But then that's a game.[/del]
Unless you're saying that you aren't able to move, in which case, I dunno what to classify it as.
Its obviously pr0n
The thing about that is, if you clip through the model you'll see all the internal organs which for me would be a turn off.

Not for everyone unfortunately.
