However, tough post-election bargaining is predicted. On the eve of the vote, one pro-Russian party was banned from the poll - a move criticised by Moscow. The elections have taken on a wider significance in the shadow of the bloody crisis in neighbouring Ukraine. That crisis began last November after Ukraine's former leadership made a last-minute U-turn, refusing to sign a landmark association and free trade deal with the EU - under huge pressure from Russia. This triggered mass protests in Ukraine that ousted President Viktor Yanukovych, and Kiev later signed the EU deal. But the protests, in turn, led to Russia annexing southern Crimea peninsula in March and throwing support behind separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine. Moldova - which also signed the EU agreement - has been under growing Russian pressure to change course. With about 30% of the vote counted, the pro-Russian Socialist Party was in the lead with about 23%, election officials said. Ahead of the vote, analysts said poll ratings of the Socialists, who want Moldova to turn its back on the EU and join a Russia-dominated economic bloc, had been boosted by its populist campaigning, including concerts by Russian pop stars. The main opposition party - the Communist Party - was running a close second with 20%. The party is a Soviet-era survivor that still uses the hammer and sickle as its symbol. Pro-Moscow forces were also expected to pick additional votes after the ban of the Fatherland party. It was barred from the elections on the grounds that it had illegally received foreign funding.
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-30265985
On the eve of the vote, one pro-Russian party was banned from the poll - a move criticised by Moscow.
time to liberate them ethnic russian minorities who are being suppressed but really echos the post-ww2 decision between freedom-loving west and communist-loving east
At this rate Russia won't even need to annex Moldova!
Oh, are we talking about the 140% elligible voters's country?
Moldova... The last bit of the USSR. :v:
Tied with Belarus.
They can keep being a shithole for all I care. Always found the people preaching about Union with Moldova a bunch of morons, this further proves that it's a stupid idea.
they're pretty bad socialists if they support an corrupt, imperialistic oligarchy
they're pretty bad socialists if they support an corrupt, imperialistic oligarchy
They're not socialists. That's just a name for their party as they're just another pro-russian party like the communists made to gather votes. Shows that you don't know shit about the country but you still rate dumb

woah didn't mean to hurt your feelings dude, but apathetically calling moldova a shithole and dismissing the pro-unionists as "morons" is a pretty dumb thing to say
woah didn't mean to hurt your feelings dude, but apathetically calling moldova a shithole and dismissing the pro-unionists as "morons" is a pretty dumb thing to say
Moldova is the poorest country in Europe, so it can be called that. Considering their population isn't even trying to get out of poverty as they are still voting for communists. And pro-unionists are morons, because they keep to this stupid idea that "Moldova is Romania" just because they once were part of our country and we share language and culture. Please, they don't even want us. This is made even more clear now how the population there don't vote the Pro-EU parties. Americans built them roads, gave them Humvees and equipped the police, Romania built them kindergardens, gave them ambulances, buses for school children, theatres, all kinds of shit, Brits gave them firetrucks. What do they do? They vote for Pro-Russian parties when all Russia did was give them the 14'th Army stationed in Transnistria, and impose embargoes on Moldova when it felt like it (Romania always offered to buy the products that were embargoed so the farmers wouldn't lose money). You telling me hoping for a Union with a country like this isn't retarded?
Moldova is a joke.

I personally know people who voted based on the Russian inspired idea of East vs West, dirty european gay apologists, imperialist america and "theyre both equally as bad but i hate america more". I know people who worked and travelled to the us and still would support Russia after bragging how great us living is. Also, at 80% votes counted, the pro EU party is now in second place, albeit sandwiched between socialists and communists.
