Do you think Cancer is necessary for population control?

So, long story short, I was talking to a friend who, not going to lie, has some pretty black and white views on a lot of issues, including this one. We where discussing what the effects of a cure for cancer would have on society. Later on in the argument, my friend said that cancer was necessary for population control. He said that if cancer was suddenly cured, population would skyrocket, resulting in only negative effects for the world.
What are you opinions on this issue?
Wrong section.
And no.
yes
Education (especially for women) and development are the keys to population control. Countries with a good education system for young women have lower fertility rates, as do developed/developing nations.
No death squads, forced sterilizations, or cancer for that matter required.

Cancer accounts for only roughly 11% of deaths in high income countries. Even assuming you could somehow cure all types of cancer in one go (you can't) the population wouldn't "skyrocket".
Wrong section, and cancer is a terrible and inhumane idea for population control, first off, some types are incredibly agonizing, such as stomach and liver cancers. Education is key for population control, unless it gets out of hand, but then by that time it's probably too late.
I wouldn't mind another plague wiping out some of the population :v
Gay marriage is necessary for population control.
Considering cancer mostly strikes those beyond the prime reproductive age I can conclude that you're just a chronic slerger.
Reasons why cigarettes are legal?
no, killing babies with a hammer is necessary for birth control
Tell your friend to show a little modesty and at least admit a reasonable degree of uncertainty.
Such a complex scenario cannot be thoughtlessly concluded with a guess. Either do a proper job and research or graciously defer to experts and the well-informed.
