it seems like all the solutions suck

The solutions suck because the movie industry's a bunch of greedy fucking slave drivers. Not deserving of money, in my opinion.
Buy a blue ray drive
I've tried a few players and they all seem to suck horrendously. Sometimes I've been unable to play a movie all together and had to resort to saving it as a lossless MKV and then watching it from that.

I've tried that but it doesn't actually work when I try to play a movie. I don't know why.
what program do you use for the mkv rip?
Also the vlc thing won't work for modern blu-rays because they upgraded the DRM to prevent just that
I gave up in the end because none of the software vendors could update their keys fast enough to watch the latest stuff legally.
I bought a cheapass Bluray player and put it on top of my HTPC. It's infinitely less hassle.
Other than that MakeMKV does a cracking job of making MKVs.
Bare in mind I gave up last year, things may have changed.
MakeMKV is the best ripper out there. But I just use the bundles PowerDVD that I bought with my Blu-Ray drive. It works fine for me.
But yeah, legal blu-ray playback sucks currently.

Thats partly the problem, another is missing keys. That files on that website are quite out of date it seems and the only way to get the more up to date files is to compile it for yourself.
It's also really inconsistent in terms of what it can play as well, E.g I can play Raiders Of The Lost Ark on it but not the other three.

What counts as a modern blu-ray? Because I can watch Avengers on VLC with my bluray disc. Going to try with Iron man 3 whenever it comes.

As if we needed more proof that the MPAA is trying to remove our freedom to watch things however the fuck we want.
Guess I'm never going to be touching Blu-Rays then, because I sure as hell am not going to let them install their rootkits or whatever contamination onto my shit.
