"Because it's a MOBA with a dedicated fan base. Also, it's free."
Because most people are secretly masochists
They should do an article on d2ware :P
I don't really think it's the audience being hardcore that makes it a huge game. If that was the deciding factor we'd have some very different titles in the Top10 most played on Steam and a very different climate in the games industry in general. IMO the main advantage of MOBAs is breadth and depth. Tons of heroes that all feel different while you're playing the game, and outside the game you can keep your head busy by thinking about hero combos, lane setups, item builds, etc. Basically if you like the game, there's a lot to dive into, and Valve increased that metagame aspect a ton by linking DOTA with: - random drops (Skinner ahoy!) & customization - Workshop integration - mod-ibility - extensive support for replays, which in turn supports -- Tournaments and pro players -- casting -- and social media that can extract content that way (YouTube videos, gifs, whatever) - trading cards - guides All of these things can keep people thinking about DOTA even when they're not playing, which in turn creates communities full of these people, which in turn can create that passion which the author assigned to the hardcore crowd. You don't need to be hardcore to be a productive member of the DOTA2 community. You can read a bit of lore and post a cute Venge/Dragonus chibi couple. You can send DotaCinema that completely failed skillshot. You can go vote on a guide that just saved your nooby ass. It's the sum all those little things from my point of view, especially in a genre that's notoriously for frustrating core mechanics that breed toxic communities like nothing. I for one don't really like playing DOTA2 against people. But then I watch Purge and get interested in trying out his hero against bots. BAM. 300h lost. TL;DR Valve massively expanded the metagame from people merely thinking "aw yeah just one more level up till that Shotgun unlock!" when not playing the game.
This really isn't a well written article.
The comments section of any Dota article on RPS is fucking painful.
Because all the"Russian only" thought it would be brain-shittingly hilarious to play on English speaking servers and not their own.

The game tries to pair you with people who speak English, but sometimes this isn't always possible and the game doesn't want to keep you waiting too long so it can just throw russians with the english.
It's not the biggest game on steam. It only takes 6GB on my hard drive.
It's not the biggest game on steam. It only takes 6GB on my hard drive.
not a very funny joke
It's not the biggest game on steam. It only takes 6GB on my hard drive.
Considering the game contains a fuck ton of models I'm actually surprised compared to TF2 having 12GB worth of nothing.
what an incredibly long article for a question that almost everyone can answer

They'd rather be on the bigger better servers. It's basically just a big immigration analogy.
