I do not, however, like the idea of damning this move completely. Because the fact is, ads (at least, where appropriate in the context of their respective games) could make heftier pieces of DLC completely free.
I actually agree. Free DLC? Good. I'll be able to stand an ad here or there as long as it's free!
It sucks though how much of a complete flop SimCity was, however... and making one of the major complaints about the game EVEN WORSE is just not helping them at all.
The add papers I get in my mail are "free" too.
The add papers I get in my mail are "free" too.
are your ad papers interactive pieces of digital content that you can use to decorate and manage a videogame?
no.
So they take up no resources but add happiness to your city
I wonder how long until somebody makes a complete shithole of a city kept alive just by these things being everywhere :v:

I could tape my ads up on my walls as 'decorations' if I wanted to doesn't change the fact that they're ads

all they really do is provide transportation and a bit of happiness, so i don't really think it'd be terribly interesting

I use them to cover the floor when I come in with muddy shoes so I don't have to wipe it. Sometimes I tear them to little bits as a stuffing when I send of a package for ebay.
That's very interactive.
They're still free and clog up my mail and paperbin, oh and they are adds.

instead of having a dumb sarcasm war that will just end up being absolutely terrible how about we come to the conclusion that i am 100% right and you will never best me in arguments
no but really why the hell are you abusing ads like that
the better question is why the fuck does anyone actually give a shit. Who cares if it's an ad it's free

A+ logic here.
The point is that they are trying to disguise paid ads as "free dlc"

Because its free, albeit unwanted, paper :)
Do they force you to plop down the charging station? No. What's the big deal then? You can have it if you want it, if you don't want it in there don't put it in.

problem is that one person using them fucks with the always-online game economy of everyone nearby
thanks to maxis's stupid 'vision', others using DLC like this will actually affect you, whether you choose to use it yourself or not
If anyone wants to jump ship, Micropolis will let you play the real SimCity 1989 for free, and legally.
"Balance breaking"
I wonder if RPS or any of the people complaining about this know that there are already buildings that generate benefits without using utilities. I'm surprised people are getting this worked up over it, particularly people who don't even play the game.

They disguise the inclusion of adds into the game as a supernice and friendly move. That's the problem.

EA is a business, what do you expect? Them not to make money where they can? Not defending EA, but Jesus Christ, an ad is not the end of gaming as we know it. It only benefits the consumer in the end because it is free FOR THEM, gets a company's image out there (and, in this case, a fitting way), and gets the company who made the DLC in the first place additional money to create content for the game.
EA is a business, what do you expect? Them not to make money where they can?
Yes. I expect them to be profitable but I don't expect them to exploit everything they can and blatantly lie to their customers.
Christ you make it sound like they are going PLACE THE CHARGING STATION DOWN OR YOUR CITY DIES. BUY NISSAN CARS TODAY.
It'll probably be buried in the park section and you'll never have to use it like ever and you have to go to a webpage to even get it. Who gives a flying fuck.

How exactly are they blatantly lying, the entire description page just says it's a building you can add to Simcity
I didn't see anyone complaining when Burnout Paradise had McDonalds and Gillette ads

No that's what you are interpreting.
I am saying that they are getting money from Nissan for this and trying to redeem their image by "poviding free DLC"

The lying was directed to the whole Sim City debacle.
What is all the fuss about? It's just a ploppable that increases your city happiness, it's not intrusive at all

And i'm saying who gives a fuck. Don't redeem the DLC then. They aren't forcing anything on anyone so I don't see why complain.
Tf2 advertises every damn game under the sun. Do you give a shit about that?
So RockPaperShotgun decides to circlejerk about how horrible EA, Maxis, and SimCity are for weeks and now that EA makes another blatantly boneheaded move it's all hugs and kisses?
RPS is generally pretty good but it's obvious now that they're just being controversial for ad views
Remember Ads on Orange Box in CS 1.6?

Remember? They're still in there afaik

remember, it's not scummy shit game journalism if it's trashing something i don't like!
Didn't EA try this back in Battlefield 2? I remember there being Intel ads on an in-map advertising board in one of the post-launch maps.

i don't really see how that would have been an issue, game realism wise
everybody knows about intel's plan to put up thousands of billboards in the middle of fucking iran
