My friend is going to buy one of these: http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-m15x/pd?refid=alienware-m15x&~ck=mn After some nagging I got him to think about a laptop I show him. He want to run minecraft with fraps running at about 30-50 fps and wants a Core i7. He cannot wait until Sandy Bridge so no waiting. He is in the US.
I can't get fraps to work on minecraft.

Fraps records DirectX applications, but Minecraft uses OpenGL.
or even this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834214050&cm_re=qosmio_460m-_-34-214-050-_-Product this thing even supposedly gets 3.5 hrs of battery
Fraps records DirectX applications, but Minecraft uses OpenGL.
Fraps records OpenGL apps too.
Tell him to get a tower for gaming.
Tell him to get a tower for gaming.
:what:
:what:
Why would you want a gaming laptop when you can have a tower. And if he is gaming he isnt going to want shit to none battery life.
You can't carry around a tower, monitor, keyboard, and a mouse everywhere. Even though it may not have a lot of battery, a gaming laptop can be beneficial, especially in college, where you can just plug in the power adapter and play LAN.
Alienwares break fast, and once broken, they are forever. Don't count on support. They are heavy have no fucking vents, they designed it to look pretty not preform.

Once they invent that and a variant of PCI-Express for laptops I'll be satisfied.
Why would you want a gaming laptop when you can have a tower. And if he is gaming he isnt going to want shit to none battery life.
Minecraft will run fine on a laptop, even a $600 decent one.
Tell him to get a tower for gaming.
Wouldn't building a whole tower just for gaming cost a bit much? I mean after you factor in property tax, building an materials costs it would cost A LOT more than a laptop. After carefully considering the pros and cons of building a whole building for gaming I would suggest to your friend that he buys a gaming computer whether it be desktop or laptop for the sake of saving money. Although property can have certain pluses like equity and financial security I do think that the option for a gaming laptop would be the best choice.

They should avoid the following... not that it a horrible structure, it just looks to flimsy and not well built.
Why would you want a gaming laptop when you can have a tower. Laptops are extremely powerful as of late, we aren't partying like it's 1999 anymore.

Thats just me though, I love gaming so I don't think any laptop could satisfy me.
2.5 hours, in my opinion of bad battery life if you're gaming. For a laptop, its decent though.
I love my ASUS gaming laptop.

[editline]21st December 2010[/editline]
lol ok but were is pwr???
The tower is stuffed full of double aa's.
ah of course
lol ok but were is pwr???
Nuclear power pack.
ah of course
It could also be powered by Kim Jong-Il's bullshit. Either works.

Because there's a difference between a gaming laptop and the 320M, I suppose you've got in yours. No critique, but not all people will be satisfied with that performance.
Tell him to get an Asus G53Jw or ASUS G73Jw. Compare the specs, and show him how wrong he is. Or, even show him the Sager NP8120 on XoticPC, which has dual 5870 GPUs, and is $1800.
Oh, I thought he was using something decent.
I assumed he talked about his MBP, as that was the last laptop I heard him having.
