Researchers at Kingston University have created a system that uses artificial intelligence to recognise specific types of behaviour, such as someone holding a gun. The technology is capable of following a person across multiple cameras. Privacy campaigners warned that it might be used to target groups such as political protesters. However, the developers insisted that their invention would allow police to focus on law breakers and erase images of innocent civilians. The technology works by teaching a computer to recognise specific types of public behaviour, known as "trigger events". "In riot situations, it could be people running - a crowd might converge in a certain place," said Dr James Orwell of Kingston University "If somebody pulls out a gun, people tend to run in all sorts of directions. These movements can be detected." When an event is triggered, the software collates video footage from before and after the incident to record a full history of the suspect's movements. "If a window was smashed and shop looted in a town centre street, the technology would trace back to see who smashed the window and then retrace his steps to see when and where he entered the town centre. "The technology would also trace where the man had gone after leaving the scene," said Dr Orwell.
I would put these "Smart" cameras to test and flail my arms vigorously spinning my body yelling curse words.
In before 1984 children come and say "Omg government."
This is great! This means you don't need as many officers out on the streets, risking their lives. Just have some yahoos at a security console looking through the cameras, and have them dispatch officers to any location!
Paint hand black. System overloaded. [editline]24th August 2011[/editline] Print out pictures of guns. Put them on the backs of cars/humans.
This is up there with the robotic helicopters with tazer launchers.

What could possibly ever go wrong!
There's something like this in a Village in England, the cameras follow your car as you drive through the village and also act as ANPR if you are uninsured or the car is stolen etc. The Police said statistics showed that 90% of the village were for the cameras, whereas an independent study showed it was less than 50%
and erase images of innocent civilians.
Yeah because that happened the last time with airport security. Instead of nudity, it'll be blackmail and privacy infractions.
I'm skeptical about the effectiveness and the implications, but I'll tentatively lean towards being in favour.
The reason why this happens is because of high criminal activities happening in those areas. If crime rate were low, there won't be a need for these kind of security.
The UK has always had the largest and most advanced CCTV system on the planet. They'll continue to keep it that way as they find that it's the easiest way to keep the crowds under control.
Big Brother is at it again...
Big Brother is at it again...
You don't know about Big Brother, you only find out later. Its more a, "I know it exists but I don't know where." CCTV cameras stick out like sore thumbs.
and erase images of innocent civilians.
Governments need to stop trying to justify blanket security by saying "we'll erase innocents we promise".
Everyone has made 1984 jokes, yet nobody has mentioned that the scientist is named Dr. Orwell. Come on people.
You know some guy is going to alter the algorithm so that it also records girls with large...eyes. Then he's going to track where she came from and where she went- instant Superstalker.
You don't know about Big Brother, you only find out later. Its more a, "I know it exists but I don't know where." CCTV cameras stick out like sore thumbs.
yup you also can use lasers to disable them
There's going to be so many hacks and funny things you could do to it, just for lolz, and then they'll realize it was better with officers. Or it'll work and they'll save billions of dollars and everything will be great until it crashes.
