Understandable, same goes for pretty much every recent game on the PS3 and 360.
thank god for replaceable HDDs

we are running out of use for discs BIG TIME.
thankfully it's not "Needs online"
Good thing you can swap hard drives in and out as you wish, making it possible to have every game installed and ready to run as long as you're willing to pay for the extra HDDs (which can only go down in price and up in storage capacity)
You know, when I first heard both consoles had 500gb hard drives, I thought "Wow this is all we'll need"
Then I see that the games are like, 30-40 gigs, each. What the fuck :v:
You know, this is understandable. With 1tb drives being $100ish, it's not a huge expense to go out and double your storage capacity.
And it's not a dumb thing at all. It allows for better graphics, faster load times, and all sorts of excellent things that would not be available otherwise. Disc drives of all sorts are just so slow, you can't do nearly the stuff you want to on a disc-based game alone.

Why would you ever think 500GB was enough in 2013?
I would usually consider this a terrible thing, but I never knew about the interchangeable HDDs

For console games, 500GB was enough up until recently
So pretty much nothing changes.

I think having them save you having to download 30+gigs of data is a pretty good use.
I like the idea of downloading games but it isn't always easy when the games are getting the size they are.
Disks will always be used as long as the data amount of games and movies increases faster than average internet speeds.
In fact if PC games get to 30-40 gigs per download I might start buying physical copies again. Internet speeds just don't seem to be progressing at all, or at least at the rate they should be.
They're not... Huzzah for technocratic oligopoly!
Makes me wonder what Valve will do, though, since their business model relies so heavily on internet speeds. I'd be surprised if we didn't see pop-up Steam stores in the next few years.

I don't see brick and mortar steam stores happening, those would probably cost a shit-ton to run. But it would be pretty neat to see something like mail-ordering physical games from them.
This comes to a surprise for some people? The "next gen" consoles are basically 3 year old gaming comptuers.

Oh God, I hope not. I'm afraid to see what will replace it.

If Australia doesn't do anything soon about our internet, we're going to still need to use discs for another 100 or so years. :(
Just wait till we're doing 125gb installs halfway through generation 8
This is how a lot of PS3 games do it anyway.
(As I can tell from Last of Us, Beyond Two Souls, MGS4, etc.)
I have a 1 tb drive in my ps3, which I almost have full. Can't wait till 4tb 2.5" drives are available, because that shits gonna fill fast.
I thought we already knew about this, several places mentioned it a few months ago. It installs part of a game and you can play while it installs the rest in the background.

Almost all PS3 games will install, correct. this is due to the problems of using Blu-ray, a very slow to read media that will likely never speed up until a new standard based on it exists. It's better to install a chunk of constantly used content rather than have long loading times from disc reads.
Behold, Sony's new 'user-replacable' hard drives required for the PS4:

(Not really, but I can imagine it being this way.)
[sp]proprietary shit, like with the PS Vita[/sp]

Sony only do things like that for their portables because the portables just aren't profitable, and high speed flash memory is pretty expensive anyway. Don't expect them to require any obscure or minor modified propriety HDD connectors.
I partially think we should go with "pieces of plastic that nintendo uses" for speed or whatever disk format the Wii U uses thats pretty quick
Automatic caching isn't the same as a 40gb install.
The caching runs in the background and it's temporary.

So it's dynamic, and can presumably remove other data? That makes more sense.
Seems reasonable to me. Kind of dumb really to expect to read Gigabytes of data from a disc, constantly, every time you loaded up a level or a game and played it. There's just too much information now to be pulled off of a disc fast enough. The 360 can only just barely do it as it is, and in some cases can't

i don't get sony. on one hand, they have un-proprietary USB connection stuff for their ds3/ds4 controllers and standard harddrives for the ps3, but then they have all that dumb ps vita memory card bullshit.

I get them entirely. Think about it, you're making a niche gaming device that's probably never going to recoup production costs on its own. You're not making anything on licensing, because you don't have any big titles. What's the best way to make money on it? Proprietary storage formats.
