build
When under a budget for a rig just for gaming (especially under $1000), the i7s should be avoided. It's a waste of money since you can get an i5-3570k for $100 less and have it perform the same in games. You'll be much better off with an i5-3570k or even an i3-2100 if you so wish to spend more on a graphics card.
Really mature, Matt-, making alt accounts just for ratings. And Kirbyguy is 100% correct. You don't throw in an i7 and 8GB of RAM when someone asks for a gaming build, and then leave them with just a 6850 graphics card. Also you forgot about a case and an OS. Do you expect him to just put this all together on the floor and not have an operating system to run on it? Also if Mike only intends to play games and browse the internet on his computer, he doesn't even really need an Ivy Bridge CPU. The Phenom II is still a great choice for budget gaming builds, but I can understand if he'd prefer having an AM3+ board for future upgrades over the AM3 board I put in there.

It performs similarly to the Phenom II but it has an upgrade path to an IB i5 or an i7 if he kept the motherboard I had in my build. The i3-2100 only about $10 more than a 965 so he could go with a 7850 like in your build. I guess it depends on what kind of games he plays. If it's anything CPU intensive like GTA 4, then it'd probably be a better idea to go with an i5, but if it relies more on the graphics card than the CPU, then the i3/Phenom would be better.
