Not the laziest x + y comparison
It is, though.
8 direction shooting? Why do people do this? It was a limitation of the times, it's not retro, nostalgic, or good in any way. Nobody back in those days would have used it if they weren't forced to.

I can see some games where limited aiming directions work, because it helps make the game more challenging (à la Alien Hominid or something), but in most cases, I have to agree.
If it's like Shoot Many Robots then I'll have to pass on this.
8-Directional movement/shooting is terrible on keyboard
it's like skyrim meets mario kart
Eight direction shooting can be really cool, when it's added for gameplay reasons. It allows for more specific level building because it's easier to plan around what kinds of shot a player can pull off. Saying it only exists because of technical limitations is dumb, and while it might not work well on a keyboard, not all games play their best on keyboards anyways, so what does it matter?

It's procedurally generated, so unless it's diablo style where you just concatenate pre-built rooms, I don't think you'll be seeing such.

It would be kinda weird to go for that gameplay set up, and not have pre-built room titles. Considering it features platforming elements, and doesn't have deformable terrain, I don't see how they would be able to make a fun game without pre-built rooms. And again, because the tiles could come in any order, keeping shooting on only eight directions makes it much easier to predict how players will be able to aim when entering or exiting those tiles.

It's still a bad control method even on controllers.
I love how ya'll forgotten the king of 8 directions. Metal Slug.
At least I think its 8 directions.

Depends on how It's implemented. It worked fantastically in super metroid. While it might be shitty on a standard twin stick controller, lots of controls schemes are. Doesn't mean that all games should pander to them.

Four direction shooting. You could should in multiple directions in the Metal Slug or if you're wielding the HEAVY MUHSHEEN GUN and you point the gun up repeatedly while firing.
Contra is the king of 8 directional shooting.
Also the name drops used here are retarded and whoever wrote this article should be very ashamed of themselves
8 directional shooting only worked in chess lets be honest.

It's actually the comparison the devs use themselves on their kickstarter.
Anyway, I backed it, apart from the 8 Direction Shooting (Why? Just use mouse aim, for the love of god), it sounds really cool.
I'm not sure that many "vanilla" (gameplay-wise) side-scrolling combat games have mouse aim.
I mean there's Terraria/Starbound-like games, which as far as I know are not really praised for their combat. There's games like Capsized and ARES but they tend to have some set of odd movement features to keep things interesting.
Come to think of it, most platformers I've played either don't have many ranged weapons, have ranged weapons but only shoot 2, 4, or 8 way, or have ranged weapons and mouse aim but either aren't about combat or have some kind of non-standard movement style.
The scenario of a straight run-and-jump platformer with mouse aim for ranged weapons seems very often avoided for some reason.
