We've got a LAN coming up and he doesn't want to be that guy slapping his secondhand-IBM laptop during a game. . . Budget: ~900.00 USD So far: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/mRpLdC The 7950 was chosen over the GTX770 The i5 4670k was chosen over the 4590 I'm looking at SSD drives for installing windows, but I really don't know where to start.. Help? Please don't consider peripherals like OS, monitor, etc.. as his main focus is a getting a suitable tower. My friend and I thank you.
The GTX 760 outperforms the 7950 in gaming and is at the same price point. I'd consider that. I would recommend considering the build that Levelog posted. High end gaming rigs are quite cheap now days and low end rigs are even cheaper. That build is quite high end and should see a good 5 years, if not 7 or 8 before your friend needs to even consider replacing it.
I included the 770 also you could shave off another $10 by choosing memory with smaller heatsinks but that's up to you OP. Especially considering taller heatsinks might intervene with CPU coolers. On the other hand, levelog's build has 1.65V RAM, which might not play well with Haswell's limit of 1,5V. Finding similarly priced RAM for Hollos build is probably going to be the best choice, since the 770 is significantly better than the 760.
Ah, didn't even notice that. Mobile does not play well.
Consequences of 1.65V over 1.5V ? Would something fail? And could anyone recommend a different cooler for the CPU? I actually own the CM 212 evo and it just doesn't feel right.. Aside from these I think I'm well set...

Just get the other RAM. And the next logical step above the 212evo is the Noctua DH15

Alright fellas, components are already shipping.. But one more ting:: Could anyone recommend an alternative to that CPU cooler? The CM-evo 212. I personally own one and I really don't like how it "fits" e: specifically because the bolts were really finnicky and you'd likely have to remove the motherboard from the chasis to uninstall it...
Having to remove the motherboard from a case to change coolers depends entirely on how big the cut-out on the back of the case is(if there is one), not the cooler itself. If you have to take out the motherboard to switch the 212 evo, you'll have to take it out for most other coolers too.
