Internet router dies daily, cannot use Steam or SVN checkout!
1 replies, posted
Internet connectivity slows down and stops at least once a day. Pings to outside websites time out but pings to the router itself work perfectly. Also, turning on Steam in Online mode seems to crash it, as well as any sort of SVN checkout. Please help!!!
The router's specs:
Brand: Actiontec
Model: M1424WR
Internet Service Type: Verizon FiOS
ISP: Fairpoint Communications
At any one point in time there are 4-5 computers accessing the internet with 1-2 using the Wi-Fi signal. Only one computer has Steam installed (mine) and I already disabled its auto-startup on boot. I only run Steam in Offline mode.
When the NAT table is full, the router can't remember any more connections and so appears to hang. The two primary culprits in filling the NAT table are torrents, and refreshing large server lists in gaming servers such as Steam.
source
I thought this was possibly the problem, but since I turned off Steam the problems have continued. I don't torrent either.
I do not know what generation my router is at the moment. Also, the model is M1424WR, not MI424WR.
I have TF2 and Garry's Mod and I've played online a grand total of once for an astounding 5 minutes before the router died yet again. SVN stops working only 2-3 minutes into a download. Installing Steam-purchased games takes forever as I have to start and stop the process into 5 minute segments of downloading to prevent a crash. It's a nightmare :saddowns: (although I suppose things could always be worse).
This problem has been going on for at least a year. Verizon/Fairpoint tech support has been terrible and hasn't brought us to any new conclusions other than what we already know (i.e. "Reboot the router if you have difficulty :downswords:)
Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated.
Does your router have any web interface or telnet capabilities where you can retrieve any logs?
Also by the router turning off, are you seeing it power cycle? Or could you not ping it right after it drops your connection? I don't know who Actiontec is, but I'm not going to write them off as being dependable.
When your connection does drop, does everyones connection drop? could all the computers still talk to each other, and are showing up in the routers interface?
It could be a problem with your Fiber circuit. There won't be anything you can do unless you know what you're doing, and you so happen have a spare circuit board somewhere. So you'll have to contact Verizon or who ever your ISP is about this problem you're having. They'll dispatch a technician to your house to inspect the FTTH & Circuit for any imperfections in the fiber terminations, and/or problems elsewhere.
