Made a thread like this back in october, didn't really want to bump it. I pretty much need everything apart from a monitor (optional, i could do with a new one tbh), keyboard, mouse & speakers
Anyways, i couldn't gather enough money together for a new PC at that time but am now ready to order a new one in a few weeks. Basically, i got some alright advice here but i either had a little bit more to spend, or not enough. The original post from the old thread;
Alright, it's my first time buying/building a PC but i guess it should be easy building one, right? Well, I need your help to decide what I can build!
I pretty much decided it's time for a new PC, with various stuff going wrong and the graphics card near to blowing up, but i've got no idea on what is good for that budget. I've recently been playing a few odd games now and then, so it'd be really good if it good run newish games on a good setting, as well as it to be fast for general use.
Anyway I need everything, well, a monitor is optional as i can always get that later and just use the one i've got. I've also got the standard keyboard and mouse etc.
The budget can go a little higher, but nothing higher than £550 really, unless it's really needed. Oh yeah, i'm going to need an OS but that can be added on after.
Thanks for any help!
So basically, i want some help deciding what to choose & has anything changed since i last got some advice?
P.S: You might have to explain some things to me, i'm not very computer smart
My basic requirements would be:
- Can handle games on a near full setting in case i feel like playing them (So a good graphics card pretty much)
- I will be using Photoshop & some 3d modelling programs, so hopefully it can run those well without slowing everything down
- For it to be fairly fast (but nothing over the top that requires a bunch of money)
Yeah, the budget can be extended to ~£550 (~$870?), but keep in mind i'm going to need some to purchase W7 so hopefully the price won't be so crazy.
Appreciate any help, thanks.

I have a terrible, terrible feeling that I missed something, but couldn't think what so here it is.
Also it's not about $790 because we have VAT and they don't, so it's more like $632 to them.
Why a H61 motherboard with a overclockable CPU
Why such a shitty GPU?

You're missing a case.
You're missing a case.
No he isn't.
..so any second opinions? any other builds?
..so any second opinions? any other builds?
You got second opinions, you need to fix your build's flaws like the underpowered GPU in relation to the CPU, and the fact that you're buying an unlocked CPU on Intel's cheapest chipset that can't overclock.

oh, i didn't design that build man that was a different guy
Yeah sorry. Maybe swap the GPU for a 6850/6870 and the motherboard to a P67 based one (anything ASUS, Gigabyte, Asrock is good). Maybe down the hard drive to 500gb as that will push over your budget a bit otherwise.

Or a 560 Ti if he wants good driver support.

What one should i pick? I mean i want the i5 but it is crazy out of my budget, and the only way i could afford it would be to lose the graphics card & swap it for a lower one but i'm not really sure i want to do that..
Reading up about the i3 is it is very limited with over-clocking & isn't great for gaming but the i5 2500 is pretty good with both of those..
It is really fucking tempting to just spend £580 as i want this PC to last for quite some time, but after that is the OS which is alone £70 which sends me way over what i planned to spend.
Fuck
Suggestions?
Uhm, put the motherboard back to the one I suggested if you're going with the i3. The reason the P67 was suggested was because it was an overclockable CPU. But since the i3 isn't you may as well save some money and go back to the H61. Also I've heard some horror stories about PowerColour, but mine's working fine.
[editline]28th February 2012[/editline]
Also I'm using an i3 2120 and it's pretty fine for gaming, as well as some 3D Modelling and UDK - I don't think you'll have too much of an issue with it. Also you could put the GPU down to a 6850, since the 6870 costs a fair bit more for only a tiny bit more performance. I mean if you went with a good brand (Sapphire, ASUS) I'm pretty sure you could overclock it to be nearly as fast as a 6870.

right, thanks for the advice
i put the motherboard back to the H61 and added the i3 2120 as well as the graphics card, which still leaves me around ~£30 to spend. anything i could upgrade for that?
plus do you think it's worth it for me spending over my budget for the i5? is it really that good? it's just the thought of keeping the pc long term which is really swaying me towards it
The i5 is better than the i3, but the i3 seems to be fine for me. Others may have different opinions. You may as well save the £30 for the future.
The only way to future-proof a build is money in the bank.
Also if you really decide the i3 is not good enough (doubtful) you could just upgrade to Ivy Bridge as I heard they're supported on the same motherboards.

Looks nice to me. If you're raising the budget, you should try to get a Spinpoint F3 instead of a Barracuda, those are lovely.
But other than that you look pretty good to go.

sweet i'll order it within a couple of weeks then, yeah i noticed that was £90 for a 1tb. pretty tempting but i think i'll have to pass seeing as it'll push me ~£20 over

Would a GTX460 be compatable with them? There was no signal being sent to the monitor so I don't know if it could've been that.

Finished building my pc today! Went better than expected, forgot to take some pictures of installing components and stuff but took a few once things were done. Cable management hasn't really been touched, but i plan on doing that tomorrow when i install windows. So hopefully tomorrow i'll be posting here on my new pc!
