The Opposition Leader said he will impose the live betting blackout if he becomes prime minister unless the television industry takes action first. Warning it was wrong for children to learn about gambling before they learnt about the game, Mr Abbott said the current level of gambling advertising was wrecking sport. Although his instinct was to avoid nanny-state solutions, he said governments had little choice but to intervene. He said: "We are natural deregulators, not regulators. But when you've got a significant social nuisance, it's important for government to at least be prepared to step in." Bookmaker Tom Waterhouse's appearance with Nine's commentators and his the post-game analysis have sparked bitter divisions among fans and the NRL. Free TV Australia, representing networks including Nine, Seven and Ten, has proposed new restrictions on the promotion of live odds during live sporting events. Opposition Leader Tony Abbott: "If you can't have gambling advertising during other G-rated programs, why should sporting programs be exempt?" However, the code does not restrict promotion of live odds for other sports such as interstate matches or in commercials during scheduled breaks. Mr Abbott said while he was aware networks had proposed restricting the broadcasting of odds once a game started, if they were still only talking about it after the election it would be appropriate for the government to step in.
http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/tony-abbott-to-ban-betting-ads-during-live-coverage-of-games/story-e6freuy9-1226635247286
I have actually noticed the amount of betting ads getting pretty over the top lately

yeah, i was making myself a cup of tea one night and my brother was watching the NRL on the kitchen tv and all i saw was Tom Waterhouse speaking about tonights odds and shit, it is getting out of hand they really need to regulate it i know that people should deal with their own problems but he is encouraging people to have a punt and i don't like that one bit
Liberals taking a greens policy!?!? Also, Tom Waterhouse really knows what punters want; disclosing insider information!!
I was gonna say that just during live games is a bit of a cop-out but I guess that's almost all of it anyway. It's not really a partisan issue though, everyone realises it's getting out of control and there's been talk of it by the state government in Victoria that I know of. We've got the same issue with booze ads only allowed late or on sporting shit, but they can at least be entertaining, the gambling ones are just awful in every way.
It's funny because Tony still can't think up his own policy:
Mr Abbott said while he was aware networks had proposed restricting the broadcasting of odds once a game started, if they were still only talking about it after the election it would be appropriate for the government to step in.
ban all ads
ban all ads
You've got my vote... Mr Prime Minister.
He'll ban the ads but he won't actually do anything to address problem gambling as a mental health issue
He'll ban those boats too
He'll ban those boats too
Stop the red heads, stop the tax, stop government spending, stop Malcolm Turnbull, stop the gays, stop the women working, stop punching people (just), stop interviews, stop stutter- wait no, stop the economy, stop not reading the bible, stop the boats, stop the internet, stop education and stop being popular. Sad it's going to take all that to get to the last one.
who needs them anyway

I love and hate those adverts.
Fuck off. Leave our betting alone. Ladbrokes Ad made me thing this was about the UK. Oh well, in that case nvm.
I actually didn't know till now that Tony Abbott actually arrived in Australia on a boat when he was like 3 years old :v:
Now I can watch my Rugby League without bloody Tom Waterhouse talking about how amazing he is.
