It's coming up for my birthday soon and my gonna upgrade my system. As i recently got a new case, upgraded my HDD's and im happy with my 4850 for now. I need new RAM, a mobo and a CPU I may also need a PSU as i think i have just blown my current one (im gonna test it tomorrow) i think about £50 but i probably can go a little more. My current specs are: Athlon 64 X2 2.1GHz ASUS 4850 2x 500GB WD HDD's Antec 300 570W PSU (Possibly blow) I'm not sure about the motherboard but its from a 2yo budget prebuild.
i dont see any reason to upgrade your machine. as long as you reformat once a year it should be fine. if you are going to get a new psu then buy from corsair.

Otherwise: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130250 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231278 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103727 EDIT: Oh damn, a prebuilt mobo might not let you overclock.
tbh i'd just buy a new motherboard and overclock for now, then save up and build a new computer.
tbh i'd just buy a new motherboard and overclock for now, then save up and build a new computer.
Besides the psu and mobo/pcu, it's a good and salvageable computer. A Radeon 4850 is still a good card, 2x500gb HDD's are still good Hard drives, so he's better off upgrading his current computer. Unless you want to show him a better case, he'll still be getting a large fps increase from switching to his old dual to a new quad(I say alot, but it's gonna be like a 5-15fps gain.) The mobo I suggested gives him the chance to crossfire if he wants, and it's 16x16 with DDR3 ram support.
-snip- nevermind re read op
What kind of RAM is it you got in your computer? If it's DDR2, just keep it. The RAM, not the computer. If you can salvage the RAM, you save 50$, since you will only have to buy 2GB (I presume).

1.5gb isn't that great, 4gb is pretty standard now. Otherwise, go with that 770, ram, and cpu as it'll be a nice boost.
I hate it when people talk in dollars even though budget was in pounds CPU:http://www.scan.co.uk/products/AMD-Athlon-II-X4-630-Quad-Core-S-AM3-28GHz-2MB-Cache-HT-4000MHz-95W-Retail RAM:http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/4GB-(2x2GB)-Corsair-XMS3-DDR3-PC3-10666-(1333)-Non-ECC-Unbuffered-CAS-9-9-9-24-DHX-16V Motherboard:http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Gigabyte-GA-770T-D3L-AMD-770-AM3-PCI-E-20-(x16)-DDR3-1666(OC)-SATA-3Gb-s-SATA-RAID-ATX

I didn't see that RAM before :D. Incase the OP is interested, this is what i've got. I would have ordered from Ebuyer but they don't have the motherboard i want. Also the 965 is just an overclocked version of the 955 (Or so i've heard) so you're probably better off getting the 955. Of course my mum said she'd pay for the CPU and it would be a christmas present, so i have to wait until christmas haha.
