i7 870 vs i7 950 - Price of Components vs Performance Gains
21 replies, posted
I'm looking to buy a new comp, and have come to a cross road. I can either get an i7 870 with an EVGA 1156 FTW motherboard and 4GB of Corsair dual channel 1600Mhz DDR3, or an i7 950 with an EVGA 1366 FTW3 motherboard and 6GB of Corsair triple channel 1600Mhz DDR3.
The i7 870 build has a total cost (motherboard, ram and CPU only) of $587 Australian dollars.
The i7 950 build has a total cost (motherboard, ram and CPU only) of $837 Australian dollars.
My question to you; what kind of performance gains am I going to see (if any) for an extra $250.
If my GPU and HDD/SSD configurations help:
GPU: 2 x XFX 6870
HDD: 1 x Samsung Spinpoint F3
SSD: OCZ Vertex 60GB (as boot).
WHY would you get a 950? you should just factor in a 930 seeing as it's basically the same exact CPU.

the clock is different but it's not like that matters as Intel has left overclocking wide open, most likely intentionally, with this series
I have an 870 and I love it, if it matters.

That was not the question. I simply need a comparison between the components listed, not a debate about my choice of componentry. If it matters, the i7 950 is the cheapest 1366 available to me, as neither of my local suppliers still stock i7 930's. The price increase over the i7 930 is also barely noticeable.
jesus, australian computer merchants suck, then

no need to be a dick, though
1075T best price/performance
I can back him up on that, the i7 930 is no longer in stock anywhere. The i7 950 has dropped to the same price the i7 930 was.

found it. http://www.msy.com.au/Products.aspx
Well, unless you are doing just computing and simulations of 3d graphs and stuff, not really, since the GPU has alot more of an effect on games.
And usually, 4GB RAM is sufficient for anything.

I'm amazed. You searched for the 930 to show the massive $10 price difference between it and the 950 (which is nothing for the clock speed increase).
Also, sorry I'm being dickish, I'm just continually being fucked over by the piece of shit I currently own.

He said the 930 wasn't on sale anywhere, the prices are irrelevant.

You're right. I'm just a bit shitty today. Sorry man.

Gonna have to say this.
AMD really takes the cake when it comes to value and offer some pretty darn good performance while they're at it.

1075T is just below the 930 and at a way, way lower total cost for mobo + processor.
And then you overclock it and outperform the 950 at way, way less money.
The majority of high end AMD CPUs are shitty. Go with the 870 and overclock it and it'll be just as good as the 950

I can not hit agree enough. The 870 is absolutely amazing. I'm running it at 3.5ghz on the stock cooler with some arctic silver thermal paste and it's idling at 35 C.

and then you look at the 870 which is better than the 1075T and then you overclock both and the 870 is still better
huh

passmark are you kidding me hang yourself
So in summary; get an 870 and overclock.

Yep, you have no idea how passmark benchmarks work.
