Why hello again, Facepunch.
As you probably know by know from my previous slew of iPhone app dev threads, I'm working on a few iPhone apps with my buddy. One is a to-do/GTD application entitled "CheckMate"; my job is the GUI and the icon. Here's what I came up with for the home screen icon:

*Apple automagically adds the shine and rounded corners, but it's possible via Xcode to remove them
And, due to request, the original, non-Applefied version:

FP Suggestions brought me to this:

I tried to spruce it up a bit:

well i guess it looks fine, would you mind posting the non shined version please?
i was thinking you should remove them using xcode and use your own shine/corners, and make em better.. i'm sure you can do more than just the basic shine apple uses, and since it's different it'll stand out more than the random generic iphone app icon. also try a slight gradient from black to dark grey on the check icon. :)
Some people (certainly me) won't like mis-matched icons. Try to keep the original corners and shine where you can.
Also I don't think the camo pattern goes very well with the idea of a to-do list.

I did, but unfortunately the shine covers that all up. Here, give me a few minutes and I'll post the original.

Have a better idea than camo? I'm not trying to be a dick, but I don't know myself.
Is this another note taking application?
I would think that its for a millitary app and not buy it or even look at it. The colours are too dark and not appealing.

It's a to-do/GTD (Get Things Done) app; users can input tasks, assign them due dates, priorities, view them on a calendar, etc.
Thanks for the military input, but I'm not sure how to replace it.
I think it would be better to drop the camo and replace the tan with a more vibrant colour, like green or blue.
But now it's just unoriginal :frown:

That's a sexy icon. Maybe change the check to white?
That's a sexy icon. Maybe change the check to white?
It seems white wouldn't show up to well onto the light blue.
hmm.. i didn't know people actually liked the generic shine iphone apps have, usually i try to theme them up as much as i can to get rid of them. but w/e
anyways, i say if it's a todo list, what you could use instead of the camo would be like notebook paper? like yellow with blu lines or somethin.

:iiam:
I'm pretty sure you can get an Apple-fied version that lacks reflections. The reflections make the icon look too generic.

Yes, it is possible.
[editline]08:49PM[/editline]
It's fairly generic even without the glare.
I like the spruced up black check and the orange one.

But then it would look out of place when every other icon has a reflection.

Nope. It not having a reflection is better. It gives it a cleaner, unique look, which in a market of thousands of apps, turns out to be a good thing after all.

It's all personal preference, bro. Can we discuss the reflection later, and focus on the actual image design?
Give it a tactical kind of background, or sort of like a heavy metal (not the music, the material) pattern with a metallic border. Fits well with the check.

No idea what you're getting at here. Mind sending me some sort of example?
Go with the Gold one so it stands out. I really like the "spruced" up one, but the gold one is more of an eye grabber. But nice to see you dropped the camo and created a better background! I think the new one looks great.

Thanks for being so complimentary. I'm still not sure I like it yet though :/

Same background pattern. Replace the Apple with the checkmark, add some sort of a thick metallic border, and viola.

What the hell are you talking about?

Oh wow, that original image didn't load. :downs:

Can you see it now?

Sure... but how would I produce something like that in PS?
Sure... but how would I produce something like that in PS?
It can be done with some pretty simple filters and a brush for the little spots on the apple. And then using some color overlay and coloring techniques you could get the material down.

Would you show me how to produce the background via a series of images taken from PS? Or just write some text, whatever is easiest.

I am not sure if I am completely capable of actually explaining it. I go through PS with a flow and just work until something comes out. I do remember seeing certain filters in there to achieve an effect of this nature.
Maybe someone more proficient with PS could maybe guide you through it.

I'm just interest in the hexagonal pattern and the brushed metal texture.
