It may sound like an ironic joke, but it isn’t. Less than a week after the massive rallies in defense of “free expression,” following the murders of the Charlie Hebdo cartoonists, French authorities have jailed a youth for irony. The arrest is part of a harsh crackdown on free speech in the country that has prompted criticism from national and international human rights organizations. A 16-year-old high school student was taken into police custody on Thursday and indicted for “defending terrorism,” national broadcaster France 3 reports. His alleged crime? He posted on Facebook a cartoon “representing a person holding the magazine Charlie Hebdo, being hit by bullets, and accompanied by an ‘ironic’ comment,” France 3 states.
http://electronicintifada.net/blogs/ali-abunimah/france-begins-jailing-people-ironic-comments Drawing he posted on Facebook, which says "Charlie Hebdo is shit, it doesn't stop bullets." It shows an Egyptian protestor getting shot, holding a sign saying "The Quran is shit, it doesn't stop bullets."
I'm having trouble seeing how that fake cover actually defends terrorism. This is just beyond retarded and hypocrite to arrest someone for that.
"Only we're allowed to make fun of people dying" is pretty much what's going on here. Kid literally is just doing what they did.
I wouldn't have been surprised to see a cover like that from the real Charlie Hebdo team tbh.
What's ironic is how zealously they claim to defend the principles of free speech, until somebody says something that they don't like.
Reminds me a little of America just after 9/11, where everyone became uber butthurt if you didn't lend undying support to the government.
I dunno, maybe he's actually just starising the satirists, which I imagine they could get behind. Or maybe he is just defending terrorism, I dunno, never met the guy.
well this is just fucking wrong
You can satire muslims but not cartoonists?
I dunno, maybe he's actually just starising the satirists, which I imagine they could get behind. Or maybe he is just defending terrorism, I dunno, never met the guy.
The people of Charlie Hebdo ought to protest his imprisonment.
One of the core ideas of free speech is letting people say stuff that offends you. Good job France.
Damn it, France. I found that image funny in an ironic satire sort of way and shared it with some people. That could've been me you're jailing. You can appreciate the caustic humor of it without supporting terrorism.
To be honest, Charb would be the first person to jump to that kid's defence.
The people of Charlie Hebdo ought to protest his imprisonment.
Yep, something like that could kick the French government out of their current kicking of free speech.
What's ironic is how zealously they claim to defend the principles of free speech, until somebody says something that they don't like.
this is the point i was trying to make a few threads back, and i get showered in boxes... you put up something incredibly offensive and tell people to just get over it, guaranteed most people wouldn't do that if it struck a nerve with them. with all this charlie hebdo shit, you're fighting fire with fire. it's not the best solution to the problem, if anything you're stooping to the level of the same people that you talk down to.
This is literally forgetting the whole idea behind the whole Charlie Hebdo ordeal.
Free Speech is dying.
Even if it was "defending terrorism", he's not actively supporting terrorism with money or other resources, nor is he providing any human capital. A magazine cover is hardly supporting terrorism.
Not gonna lie, this is actually funny.
Not gonna lie, this is actually funny.
Imo it's not, it's awful, a poor effort, and not even an amusing piece of irony to begin with. But that doesn't mean somebody should be arrested for it.
Not gonna lie, this is actually funny.
You could just rate funny if you're not going to explain why. Without explanation, no one will ever care.
Free Speech is dying.
It's not dying nor even close to death. There have been times in history when that sort of thing warranted the death penalty immediately. At best, freedom of speech today has a cold it can't get over and keeps coughing and sneezing.
France, hey, guys, buddy ol' pal ol' friend. Remember the last time a European power decided what was and wasn't okay to say in public? Let's not start this
Reminds me a little of America just after 9/11, where everyone became uber butthurt if you didn't lend undying support to the government.
The difference is you didn't get arrested for it here. You might get a talking to by some badges and suits if you said the wrong thing, but you wouldn't be arrested unless you made a credible threat.
well his life is ruined.

Being able to say anything you want comes at the cost of hearing things you don't like. Even things that are sometimes awful.
Wow, France, get your shit together. Is it really this hard to get a developed country to not do dumb shit?
