And here lies the inherent problem with the people currently working on Dead Rising.
The first game you're fucked if you can't do critical thinking and strategy, the second game slightly less so, the third game I don't think I died once on non-nightmare mode and I got most of the survivors my first time around, and now they've gone and done shit like removing the timer from 4*.
Dead Rising was a thinking man's game. Can we hand the franchise back to Japanese developers yet?

I imagine they think that the only reason people played Dead Rising was the cheesy acting and story when that was only one reason people loved it.

Even if that was their mindset they haven't even hit the level of cheese and expression that DR1 did. The "THIS IS MY STORE" scene is still my favorite.
dead rising as developed by people who want to go back to the roots of the first but never played a dead rising game in their life

Am I alone in disliking the DR series due to the limited time element? I remember wanting to just enjoy the setting and play around with the features of the first game (having never played any sort of sandbox-y survival game at the time) and never at all bothered with Zombrex in the second
In hindsight (considering the variety of games that currently cater to that sorta gameplay) I guess the time feature is a fundamental part of the game's design but I remember feeling pretty underwhelmed when I realised I had to sacrifice exploration and casual adventure for the sake of a race-against-the-clock campaign, rushing to experience the story seemed futile upon learning that if you can't reach an event like a survivor or psycho in time then you just have to accept it and continue with the play through, and the way the game handled save data just made it worse
Even if it might be a base-level misunderstanding of the entire purpose of the game, I'd still love to play a freeroam-type mode in the original mall. When I first bought the game I was so nervous about the spooky night zombies that towards evening I'd gather up piles of throwable weapons before using furniture to barricade myself into diners :v:
The time limit made the game a lot more tense, and added a great deal to the tone and atmosphere. Without it the game just becomes silly and mindless.
The zombrex timer in the second game was pretty bad because it forced you to collect them, but in the first game you could completely disregard the story missions if you wanted to and just do whatever.
I think a main part of why some people didn't like the time limit is because it made it close to impossible to do everything in one playthrough. I don't think that needing to play through the game more than once to experience everything is a bad thing but I can see why some people might.

Not at all, my first experience with a Dead Rising game was "HOLY SHIT THAT LOOKS AWESOM- oh it's a 360 exclusive and I don't ha- oh and there's a timer too wow that's fucking weak." I would love an optional story mode that wasn't based around a timer. That timer once killed a playthrough I had with a friend and he didn't want to play anymore because he didn't want to start the whole game over. But in this game, they removed that timer and are fucking selling it back to us as DLC. If you want that original, tense Dead Rising experience then you have to pay extra for something that's been a staple of the franchise since the very first game.

A lot of people enjoying taking this all in. Taking their time and exploring. Time limits doesn't really help them do that.

Both DR1 and 2 had long stretches of time where doing story missions wasn't imperative so the player could do what they wanted to, and both gave you the option of completely ignoring the time limit. In DR1, you pretty much had to if you wanted to get the achievement for rescuing 50 survivors.
Ah, ye olde time limit debate. To be frank it depends entirely on each individual gamer and each individual game. Fallout 1's original time limit without the patch was - regardless of perfectly understandable lore reasons - a nightmare for me. Even with the extended time limit in the patch it never seems like enough time to get anything done without a guide, never been a fan of that and I typically skip it and go straight to Fallout 2.
Dead Rising 1 and 2 were completely fine, not just because they're not rpgs, but also because I was aware of the fact that I could start again at any point with my current level preserved, and missing some survivors didn't bother me anyway. So there's also the thought of what content you think you're missing.
It's all about your tolerance and way of thinking. I think the time limit made Dead Rising 1 and 2 better games. It didn't matter much in Dead Rising 3 at all, which had a profound impact on my enjoyment. I won't be getting this one, but to be honest having no time limit at all makes zero difference considering 3's was so long it covered all the available content.
I will stay on my critic that DR2 is the best dead rising. I love the concept.
